Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

The gala began to wind down around midnight, but the quiet that followed was broken as we stepped into the private VIP lounge near the hotel’s rear executive exit.

Marco was waiting inside, his expression rigid.

"Damian," Marco said quietly. "We have a problem at the port."

Damian’s expression hardened instantly into the cold, calculating mask of the mafia Don. "Explain."

"Sal Moretti had a brother. Dominic. He’s been in Southern Italy for six years. He landed at O’Hare three hours ago under a forged diplomatic passport. He’s seized control of the dry docks in Gary, Indiana. He’s holding four of our transport drivers hostage."

Marco looked grimly toward the door. "He sent a courier with a message. He wants an exchange. He wants the boy, or he blows the storage tanks."

A cold dread pooled in my stomach. The nightmare wasn't over. Like a hydra, every time Damian cut off a head, another one emerged from the dark.

"Luca is already in the armored motorcade with four men," Damian said, his voice flat, completely devoid of emotion. "Keep him there."

"Damian," I grabbed his arm, my nails digging into the fine wool of his tuxedo sleeve. "You can't go alone. It’s an ambush."

"Dominic Moretti doesn't know Chicago," Damian said, turning to look at me. "He thinks he is dealing with a rival businessman. He has forgotten that I was raised in the blood of this city’s docks."

"I'm coming with you," I said.

Damian’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "Absolutely not. You stay with Luca. You stay in the armored car."

"Listen to me!" I said, stepping right into his space, refusing to back down. "Dominic wants leverage. He knows I saved Luca. If your motorcade moves toward the estate, he will know you’re securing your son. But if Marco takes Luca to the federal safe house while you and I arrive at the dock perimeter, his scouts will report that your family is fractured. It gives your men twenty minutes to flank the dry docks from the water."

Marco blinked, looking from me to Damian with sudden, grudging respect. "She’s right, boss. Dominic’s scouts are watching the highway exits. If they see Emma with you, they’ll assume Luca is in the rear vehicle."

Damian stared at me, his chest rising and falling heavily. The internal war raged in his eyes—the instinct to lock me away in a golden cage versus the realization that the woman standing before him was not a porcelain doll to be sheltered, but a partner capable of standing in the fire.

He reached up, cupping the back of my neck with his warm, calloused palm, his forehead resting gently against mine.

"You stay in the command truck," he whispered against my lips. "You do not leave the armor. If anything goes wrong, you press the detonator under the dash and drive straight through the gate. Do you swear to me, Emma?"

"I swear," I whispered.

He kissed me once—hard, possessive, and electric.

"Marco," Damian commanded, stepping back into the shadows. "Arm the team. We finish this tonight."
