Chapter 19 - The Ballad of Shadows

The interrogation in the cellar of the Lake Geneva estate lasted three brutal hours. By 5:00 a.m., the mercenary had broken completely, vomiting names, frequencies, and financial accounts.

The traitor was Marcus—the head of Damian’s technical surveillance division, a man who had worked for the Vance family for over twelve years. Stefano Rossi hadn't bought Marcus with money; he had kidnapped Marcus’s sixteen-year-old daughter in Rome two months ago, keeping her alive only as long as Marcus fed New York intelligence on Emma and Luca’s movements.

"He's been watching us through the internal security feeds," Viktor reported, his face grim as we stood in the war room of our private jet, flying at high speed back toward Chicago. "Marcus neutralized the alarm grid remotely from his terminal in the city."

Damian stood over the satellite table, his fists planted against the digital display. His eyes were shadowed with sleepless exhaustion, but his posture was that of a commander preparing to lay siege to a city.

"He targeted Emma twice," Damian said, each word dropping like an anvil. "He targeted Luca. He brought war into my house."

"Damian," I said softly, stepping up beside him. "Marcus did it because his daughter was taken. That doesn't excuse the treason, but Stefano Rossi engineered this to destroy our trust from the inside out."

Damian turned to me, his gaze softening by degrees. "If Marcus’s daughter is Stefano’s leverage, then we eliminate the leverage. Viktor, deploy our extraction team in Rome. I want Marcus’s girl pulled out of that Rossi compound within four hours. If she’s safe, Marcus turns state witness for us. He can hand us Stefano’s entire Midwestern infrastructure on a silver platter."

"Already in motion, boss," Viktor answered, typing rapidly into his secure tablet.

For a moment, it seemed like the pieces were falling into place. We landed at the private airfield outside Chicago just as dawn broke over Lake Michigan, painting the water in strokes of violent crimson and bruised purple.

We returned to the Lake Shore Drive fortress under a convoy of four armored Suburbans. The street was lined with guards, their assault rifles slung low, their eyes scanning every window of the surrounding high-rises.

We brought Luca inside. The boy was exhausted, clutching Buster’s collar as the dog limped faithfully beside him.

"I want you to rest, Emma," Damian murmured, wrapping an arm around my waist as we entered the penthouse foyer. "The Rome team is thirty minutes away from the target house. Once Marcus’s daughter is secure, this nightmare ends."

I leaned against him, closing my eyes, letting the familiar scent of his sandalwood cologne wash away the smell of smoke and lake mist. "I love you, Damian."

"I love you, Emma. More than this empire. More than my own life."

Then, Luca let out a sudden, piercing gasp.

I spun around. Luca had dropped Buster’s leash. He was clutching his throat, his face turning an alarming shade of pale blue.

"Emma... Papa..." Luca wheezed, his knees buckling under him. "My... my throat... I can't..."

Before he could hit the floor, I dove forward, catching his small body in my arms. His skin was burning with a terrifying, unnatural fever, and his pulse fluttered like the wings of a dying sparrow.

"Luca!" I screamed, pulling him against my chest. "Damian! Something is wrong!"
