Chapter 7 - Retribution

The underground safe room was silent, fortified behind eight inches of reinforced steel, but the silence inside my chest was far worse.
Luca had finally fallen asleep on the leather sofa, his breathing even and deep, exhausted by terror. I sat beside him, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, staring at the closed security monitors on the wall. The camera feeds showed the estate grounds: flashing red police cruisers, black tactical vans, and Damian’s security team systematically cordoning off the driveway.
Hours dragged by.
It was nearly four in the morning when the heavy hydraulic bolts of the vault door hissed open.
Damian walked in.
He had removed his jacket. His black dress shirt was torn at the shoulder, soaked in rain, and splattered with dark, unmistakable stains across the cuffs and chest. There was a thin cut along his cheekbone, weeping fresh blood down to his jaw. He looked exhausted, lethal, and terrifyingly magnificent.
Marco stood behind him, looking equally haggard.
"Take Luca to his room," Damian instructed quietly.
Marco nodded, gently lifting the sleeping boy from the couch and carrying him out into the corridor.
Damian stayed. He leaned back against the heavy steel frame of the open vault door, his head tipped back, his eyes closed. His breathing was heavy, the adrenaline slowly leaving his massive frame.
I stood up, leaving the blanket behind, and approached him.
"You're bleeding," I said softly.
His eyes opened slowly. In the stark light of the safe room, they were dark, bottomless, but when they focused on me, the coldness melted away.
"It is not mine," he replied.
"The cut on your face is."
I stepped closer, pulled a clean linen handkerchief from the side table, and gently lifted it to his cheek.
Damian didn't flinch. He didn't pull away. He stood perfectly still, allowing me to press the cloth against the wound. His eyes never left my face.
"Sal Moretti?" I whispered.
"No longer breathes Chicago air," Damian said, his voice flat and absolute. "Neither do the men who accompanied him. The Moretti syndicate has ceased to exist as of two hours ago."
A chill ran down my spine, but strangely, there was no fear of the man standing before me. He was a monster to the world, a phantom who ruled the city’s underworld with an iron fist, but to me, he was the shield that stood between innocence and slaughter.
"It's over?" I asked.
"The threat to you is over," Damian said. His hand rose, his fingers wrapping gently around my wrist—the very wrist where my pulse had fluttered three weeks ago in the trauma bay. "You are safe, Emma. You can go anywhere in the world. Paris, Florence, New York. I will buy you any estate you point your finger at. You never have to see another gun, or another drop of blood."
My breath caught in my throat.
"Is that what you want?" I asked, my voice barely audible in the quiet room. "For me to leave?"
Damian’s grip on my wrist tightened, not with violence, but with a desperate, suppressed longing. He pulled me half an inch closer, his dark eyes searching mine with raw, unmasked vulnerability.
"If you leave, you take the light out of this house," Damian murmured, his voice cracking slightly. "Luca loves you. And I..."
He stopped himself, his jaw tightening as if fighting a war against his own iron discipline.
"I am a violent man, Emma," he whispered. "My hands are soaked in blood. You belong in museums, in sunlit studios, far away from men like me."
"I took that glass because I chose to," I said firmly, stepping even closer until my chest brushed against his. "And I stayed in this house because I chose to. Don't make decisions about my life for me, Damian Vescari."
A slow, breathless tension gathered between us. Damian’s hand moved from my wrist up to my jaw, his calloused thumb tracing the line of my lower lip.
"You are reckless," he breathed.
"I had a good teacher," I replied.
His mouth came down on mine.
May you like
It was not gentle, but it was not cruel. It was hungry, fierce, and desperate, the kiss of a man who had walked through hell fire and finally found an oasis. I wound my fingers into the dark hair at the nape of his neck, leaning into his strength, ignoring the dull ache in my side, surrendering entirely to the storm between us.
