Chapter 16 - Vows Bound in Iron

We were married on a Saturday at the historic Cathedral of the Holy Name, private and shut down to the public under the pretext of architectural restoration.
Outside, a ring of heavily armed tactical personnel secured a two-mile perimeter. But inside, under the towering Gothic arches and through the stained-glass windows that scattered ruby and sapphire light across the stone floor, the world felt profoundly still.
I wore an ivory lace gown with a cathedral train that brushed the petals of white gardenias strewn along the aisle. My hair was swept up in soft curls, revealing the diamond earrings Damian had given me, and the faint, proud scars on my shoulder.
Luca stood beside his father at the altar, wearing a miniature tailored tuxedo with an emerald bowtie. When he saw me walking toward them, his face split into a radiant, gap-toothed grin that melted every ounce of lingering terror from my chest.
And then there was Damian.
He stood waiting for me, his towering frame framed by towering candleabras. He looked every bit the dark king of Chicago, but the vulnerability in his dark eyes when he looked at me made my breath hitch.
I reached the altar, and Damian took my hands in his. His palms were warm, strong, and steady.
"Emma," Damian said, his voice echoing through the vast stone chamber. "I spent my life believing that the world was divided into predators and prey. I built walls of iron and bone to keep everyone out, because I believed love was a weakness that would destroy whatever was left of me. But then you bled for my son. You walked through fire without a weapon, armed only with a courage I had never witnessed."
A tear slipped down my cheek, catching the candlelight.
"You taught me that strength isn't the power to destroy," Damian whispered, slipping the platinum wedding band next to my engagement diamond. "Strength is having something worth defending to the very end. I give you my life, my name, my empire, and my soul. From this moment until my last breath, you and Luca will never stand alone."
My voice shook with profound emotion as I placed his ring on his finger. "Damian, I came into your world broken, thinking my scars defined who I was. But with you, I learned they are just proof that I survived long enough to find you. I choose you. I choose Luca. I choose this family. In peace or in war, I am yours."
"By the authority granted to me," the priest declared quietly, "I pronounce you husband and wife."

Damian didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, dipping me slightly, and kissed me with a fierce, possessive tenderness that erased every shadow in the world.
Down by our side, Luca cheered loudly, clapping his small hands together, and the stone cathedral echoed with the sound of pure, unadulterated life.
