Chapter 17 - The First Crack

For our honeymoon, Damian refused to take us abroad where international airfields and unfamiliar terrain could present an ambush opportunity. Instead, we traveled to his private fortress estate on the secluded cliffs overlooking Lake Geneva in Wisconsin.
It was a sanctuary of stone, pine, and water. For seven days, the war seemed to recede into a distant memory.
Luca ran free across the pebble beaches, skipping flat stones across the misty lake surface while Buster bounded through the shallows. Damian taught me how to drive his high-powered wooden speedboat, laughing as the spray whipped our hair back. At night, wrapped in heavy wool blankets by the outdoor fire pit, we drank mulled wine and whispered about the future.
"We could build a guest wing here," I suggested on our final evening, watching the embers dance into the crisp night sky. "For children from the art center during summer camps."
"Consider it done," Damian said, leaning down to press a soft kiss against my shoulder.
Then, his encrypted satellite phone buzzed.
Damian glanced at the screen, and the easy warmth on his face instantly vanished. "Excuse me for ten minutes, Emma. It’s Viktor. They’ve intercepted an arms shipment at the south rail yard."
"Go," I said gently. "Luca and I will head inside and finish our hot chocolate."
Damian kissed my forehead, gave two brief instructions to the guards posted on the stone terrace, and strode toward the estate’s secure communications hub in the detached boat house.
I took Luca’s hand and walked inside the sprawling, rustic living room. The grand hearth was crackling with birch logs, casting warm shadows over the beamed ceiling. Buster lay curled on the rug, his tail giving a lazy thump.
"Bedtime after the cocoa, young man," I said, handing Luca his mug topped with tiny marshmallows.
Suddenly, Buster stood up, his ears pinned back against his skull. A low, rumbling growl vibrated in the dog’s chest.
"Buster? What is it, boy?" Luca asked.
The dog didn't move. He stared directly at the French glass doors leading to the dark, wooded terrace.

Every single light in the estate abruptly died.
The backup generators, which were supposed to kick in within three seconds, remained completely dead. The ambient hum of the security alarms fell into terrifying, deafening silence.
"Emma?" Luca’s voice trembled in the sudden pitch-black darkness.
My heart pounded against my ribs, but the panic that should have paralyzed me was instantly replaced by cold, sharp calculation. "Luca, put the mug down. Come here. Right now."
He scrambled to my side, clutching my sweater.

From the hallway connecting the kitchen, I heard the faint, sickening sound of a muffled scuffle—followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the hardwood floor.
The perimeter sensors hadn't tripped. The external perimeter had been bypassed. Someone had the master override codes to Damian’s private sanctuary.
