Chapter 6 - Breach

Before I could apologize or explain, a sharp, echoing *crack* shattered the silence of the estate.
It wasn't thunder. It was the distinct, whip-like snap of a high-caliber rifle shot.
Glass exploded from the vaulted ceiling of the conservatory. Shards rained down into the koi pond, sending water spraying into the air.
Luca screamed.
"Papa!"
Everything moved in terrifying, slow-motion clarity. Across the courtyard, the perimeter alarms erupted in a deafening, multi-toned wail. Red security lights flashed along the limestone walls.
"Sniper on the east ridge!" Marco shouted, drawing a weapon from his coat and diving toward the doorway.
Luca was frozen beside the fish basin, clutching his little container of fish food, staring upward at the falling glass just as he had done three weeks ago at Bellamy House.
My body moved before my brain could process the pain in my side.
I sprinted across the slick flagstones, lunged forward, and tackled Luca behind the low concrete rim of the raised koi pond just as a second bullet pulverized the stone floor where he had been standing an instant before.
"Down! Stay down, Luca!" I gasped, curling myself tightly around his trembling frame, shielding his head with both hands.
The sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the outer grounds—the estate’s security forces returning fire with brutal efficiency.
Footsteps pounded across the conservatory.
Damian slid across the wet stones, dropping to his knees beside us. His custom black automatic was drawn, his face transformed into a mask of pure, murderous rage.
"Are you hit?" he demanded, his hands instantly checking Luca, then roving over my shoulders, my back, my waist. "Emma, look at me. Are you hit?"
"No," I choked out, my teeth chattering from adrenaline. "Luca is safe. We’re okay."
Damian pulled both of us against his chest. His heart was hammering with the force of an industrial engine, his broad arms wrapping around us with a fierce, crushing protectiveness that felt stronger than the limestone walls surrounding us.
"Marco!" Damian roared over the gunfire.
"Perimeter team took out the shooter!" Marco shouted from the library doorway, his weapon raised toward the ridge. "Two vehicles breached the lower gate—Moretti’s hitters. Security is engaging them at the courtyard!"
Damian looked down at Luca, whose face was buried in the front of my sweater.
"Take him to the vault," Damian ordered Marco, his voice deadly calm.
"No!" Luca sobbed, his small fists clenching my shirt tightly. "Emma comes! Emma has to come!"
"She is coming with you," Damian said, gently peeling Luca’s fingers away and handing him to Marco. He turned his gaze back to me. His dark eyes were burning with an inferno of vengeance.
He reached out, his thumb catching a drop of water—or perhaps a tear—on my cheek.
"They came into my home," Damian whispered, the words vibrating with a terrifying promise of death. "They dared to aim at you again."
"Damian, be careful," the words slipped from my lips before I could censor them.
He froze, his thumb pausing against my skin. A dark, predatory smile touched the corner of his lips.

"Do not worry about me, Emma," he said softly. "Worry about what is left of them when I am done."
