Chapter 2 - The Silent Signal

The red pulse beneath the frosted glass of the silver clock beat with the steady rhythm of a mechanical heart. Luca did not hesitate. Moving with the lethal grace that had made him the most feared underboss on the eastern seaboard, he seized the heavy marble bookend from the bedside console and smashed it directly against the clock’s ornate casing.

Shattered crystal sprayed across the Persian rug. The clock chimed one distorted, metallic note, and then its delicate brass gears erupted into ruined fragments. Embedded between the counterweights lay a black transmitter no larger than an almond, its severed wires sparking faintly before dying out completely.

Emma flinched against his coat, her fingers trembling as she pulled the heavy wool tighter around her collarbone. Luca knelt beside her, his dark eyes assessing the precision of the listening device. It was military grade, not the cheap surplus sold by street wiretappers. Someone had spent thousands of dollars to plant a dedicated relay directly into his private sanctuary.

"Marco," Luca spoke into his lapel microphone without shifting his gaze from the maid. "Seal the northern gates immediately. Run a signal sweep across all outbound cellular frequencies within a two-mile perimeter. Whoever was monitoring that feed just heard Bianca scream, and they know the line is dead."

The radio clicked twice in acknowledgment.

Luca turned to Emma, his large hand gently cupping her chin, tilting her face into the soft lamplight. Her split lip had begun to swell, and dark bruises were already blossoming around her throat where Bianca’s manicured nails had dug in. Rage burned cold in Luca's chest. For years, he had lived under the delusion that his estate was an impenetrable fortress, yet right beneath his nose, the woman he had promised to wed was acting as an executioner.

"Did my mother tell you who planted it?" Luca asked, his voice low and calm despite the storm raging inside him.

"No, Mr. Moretti," Emma whispered, her voice rough from crying. "Your mother only told me that her bedroom was no longer safe. Two weeks before she took ill, she noticed the clock had stopped losing minutes. She said someone had serviced it without her permission."

Footsteps hurried down the hallway, and Dr. Harris entered the master suite with a medical bag in hand, flanked by two armed guards. The elderly physician took one look at Emma’s bruised face, then at the blood on the floor, and his professional composure cracked into disbelief.

"Set up in the adjacent dressing room," Luca commanded, standing up and lifting Emma effortlessly into his arms. She made a faint, startled gasp, her hands gripping his shoulders for balance. She felt impossibly light, as fragile as blown glass, yet she had carried a secret capable of tearing the Moretti syndicate apart for eleven months without uttering a word.

"You don't have to carry me, sir," she murmured softly against his neck, her cheeks flushing crimson despite her injuries.

May you like

"You took blows intended to protect my family's legacy, Emma," Luca said, his voice hard as iron as he carried her into the brightly lit room. "From this moment forward, you walk behind no one in this house."
