Chapter 9 - The Truth Laid Bare

Salvatore let his pistol drop into the mud. He raised his hands slowly, but his arrogant sneer never faded.
"You don't know the full story, boy," Salvatore spat, the rain plastering his gray hair against his forehead. "Your mother was weak. She wanted to transition the family out of the ports, diversify into legitimate pharmaceuticals and logistics. She was going to disband three generations of underworld dominance! I built this empire with your father! I wasn't going to let an old woman dismantle our legacy out of maternal guilt!"
"My mother built the shipping channels you sold to the Romanos," Luca said, stopping five paces away, his weapon level with Salvatore’s forehead. "She built the trust funds that put your children through Ivy League colleges. And you rewarded her with arsenic."
"It was business, Luca!" Salvatore yelled against the wind. "Bianca was supposed to keep you compliant! You were never meant to be killed, just managed! If you had only signed the Romano merger agreements, none of this blood would have been shed!"
Bianca fell to her knees in the wet grass, crawling toward Luca’s boots. "Luca, please! It was Salvatore’s plan! He threatened my father! He said if we didn't help him control the ports, he’d leak our offshore books to the federal prosecutor! I never wanted to hurt Emma! I was desperate! You loved me, Luca, remember?"
Luca looked down at the woman who had knelt over Emma hours earlier, ripping her hair and beating her for an inheritance she had no right to claim. Disgust, cold and absolute, washed over him.
"I never loved you, Bianca," Luca said quietly. "I tolerated you because I believed my mother wished it. But my mother saw your soul long before I did."
Luca reached into his coat and pulled out the handwritten will, letting the rain bead against its wax seal.
"Salvatore Moretti, by decree of Donna Isabella and the supreme council of the five families, you have committed high treason against the blood. Your assets are seized. Your name is struck from the register."
Luca did not look away as he turned his gaze to Marco, who had just arrived with four heavily armed soldiers, surrounding the helipad.
"Take Bianca to the cellar cells," Luca commanded coldly. "Her father can ransom her back for every dollar he stole from our docks, after which she will be permanently exiled from this country. If she ever steps foot in New York again, shoot on sight."
"And Salvatore, Boss?" Marco asked, his eyes dark.
Luca looked his uncle in the eye. "My mother died in pain over four long months. Take him to the marshlands. Let him reflect on loyalty before the tide comes in."

Salvatore began to scream, cursing and thrashing as Marco’s men dragged him backward into the darkness, his screams swallowed by the roaring wind.
