Chapter 10 - Justice and Legacy

Three days later, the rain had cleared, leaving a crisp, azure autumn sky over the Moretti estate. The shattered glass of the foyer had been swept away, the bullet holes patched and freshly painted, and the heavy air of betrayal had been replaced by the solemn scent of cedar and white lilies.
In the grand dining room, beneath the restored chandeliers, the heads of the remaining Four Families sat around the massive mahogany table. Behind them stood their respective capos and legal counselors, all waiting in tense silence.
Luca sat at the head of the table, dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit. He looked every inch the supreme don his father had been, his presence commanding absolute obedience.
Beside him, sitting not behind him, but in an executive chair directly at his right hand, was Emma Carter. She wore an elegant, tailored navy dress, her posture straight and dignified. The bruises on her face were fading, but the quiet steel in her blue eyes was unmistakable.
On the table between the mob bosses lay the toxicology report, the Cayman Island ledgers, and Donna Isabella’s handwritten testament, all authenticated by the Commission's senior magistrates.
"The evidence is undisputed," Don Vincente Falcone spoke, breaking the silence as he adjusted his spectacles and pushed the documents back toward Luca. "Salvatore Moretti and Silvio Romano committed an unsanctioned murder of a matriarch. The Romano family has surrendered their claim to the northern docks and paid fifty million in blood restitution. The Commission recognizes Luca Moretti as the sole and unquestioned head of the Moretti syndicate."
Falcone then turned his sharp gaze toward Emma. "And this woman? The Commission does not usually permit household staff to retain dynastic shares in maritime syndicates."
Luca leaned back in his chair, resting his hands flat against the mahogany. His voice filled the grand chamber with unmistakable authority.
"Emma Carter is no longer household staff," Luca stated clearly, his voice leaving no room for challenge. "She protected Donna Isabella when my own blood plotted her murder. She held the key to this family's survival for eleven months under threat of death. Under my mother's decree, she holds thirty percent of the Moretti private trust."
Luca turned his head, his dark eyes softening slightly as he looked at Emma before addressing the council once more.
"And under my decree, she is under the perpetual protection of the Moretti name. Whoever insults her, insults me. Whoever raises a hand against her, wages war against the entire family."
The bosses exchanged glances. Falcone gave a slow, respectful nod, raising his glass of red wine. "To Donna Isabella. And to the Don who avenged her."

One by one, the most ruthless men in the state raised their glasses in deference to the man who had reclaimed his empire—and to the quiet woman who had made it possible.
