Chapter 4 - The Interrogation of Bianca

The heavy mahogany doors of the east sitting room banged shut as Luca entered. Outside, two guards stood with submachine guns strapped across their tactical vests. Inside, Bianca Romano paced the Persian rug, clutching a crystal glass of bourbon, her champagne silk dress disheveled and her blonde hair coming undone from its elaborate updo.
"Finally!" Bianca sneered, turning on her heel as Luca walked into the room. "Have you come to apologize for treating me like a criminal in front of the servants? That filthy little peasant belongs in a gutter, Luca! She dared to look me in the eye when I questioned her about—"
Luca crossed the floor with terrifying speed. Before she could finish her sentence, his hand clamped around her jaw, backing her against the wall until her heels left the floor. The crystal glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the hearth.
"The clock on my nightstand," Luca said, his voice dangerously soft, barely above a whisper. "Who holds the frequency receiver?"
Bianca’s eyes widened in raw panic. She tried to claw at his wrist, but Luca’s grip was unyielding. "I... I don't know what you're talking about! Luca, you're hurting me! My father will destroy you for this!"
"Your father doesn't have the ammunition, Bianca," Luca said, stepping closer, his dark gaze piercing straight through her veneer. "I found the transmitter. And I know about the broth. I know about the slow-acting belladonna extract you and your father had delivered to this estate through the catering shipments last winter."
Color drained from Bianca’s face until she looked like a corpse. Her arrogance dissolved into frantic, gasping breaths.
"She was an old woman," Bianca stammered, tears of terror finally ruining her mascara. "She was in the way! She wanted to rewrite the succession! She was going to give the Atlantic distribution routes to an independent trust! My father had already invested fifty million into those docks! We couldn't let her cut us out!"
"So you poisoned my mother in her own bed," Luca said. The fury within him was so profound that his hand did not even shake. It was a cold, absolute realization of an unforgivable betrayal.
"It wasn't just my father!" Bianca shrieked, desperate to bargain for her life. "You think we could have bypassed your perimeter guards without an inside signature? You think I planted that listening bug myself? You're blind, Luca! Your own blood opened the gates for us!"
Luca loosened his grip just enough for her feet to touch the floor, though his fingers remained locked around her throat. "Give me the name."

Bianca smiled through her tears, a spiteful, venomous curl of her lips. "Check the chapel, Luca. Your beloved uncle Salvatore isn't praying for your mother's soul. He's waiting for my father's convoy to arrive."
