Chapter 18 - The Poisoned Well

"Behind the bookcase, Luca," I whispered, keeping my voice utterly level. "Press the third stone from the bottom. Go into the crawlspace and do not make a sound until your father comes. Do you hear me?"

Luca’s eyes were wide with terror, but he nodded vigorously. He was Damian Vance’s son; survival was etched into his marrow. He slipped behind the false panel just as the shadow appeared in the doorway.

A tall figure stepped into the living room, illuminated only by the faint orange glow of the dying hearth embers. He wore tactical gear without insignia, and in his right hand, he held a silenced pistol fitted with an extended magazine.

Buster lunged forward with a ferocious bark, but the intruder side-stepped with brutal efficiency, slamming the butt of his weapon into the dog’s flank. Buster whimpered and collapsed onto the floor.

I didn't scream. I didn't beg.

My hand moved to the heavy cast-iron fireplace poker resting by the hearth. As the intruder stepped closer to search the shadows, I swung the poker with all the momentum of my body, aiming straight for his knee.

The iron collided with his kneecap with a sickening crunch. The man grunted in agony, stumbling backward.

Before he could raise his weapon, the French glass doors shattered in an explosion of flying shards.

Damian burst into the room like a dark, vengeful fury.

He didn't use a firearm. In a blur of feral movement, Damian closed the distance, grabbed the intruder’s gun hand, and twisted it until the bone snapped through the skin. A bloodcurdling scream tore through the room as Damian slammed the man face-first against the stone hearth.

"Who gave you the codes?" Damian roared, his fingers digging into the man’s throat, pressing him against the scorching brickwork. "Who gave you the clearance for the grid?!"

The intruder wheezed, blood spitting from his split lips. "You... you locked the wrong door, Vance... Rossi knows... he always knew..."

Viktor sprinted into the room, followed by two armed guards with tactical lights. "Boss! Luca—"

"Luca is safe," I called out, emerging from behind the bookcase with my hands still gripping the iron poker. My dress was torn, and dust covered my face, but I was unbowed. "He's in the panic room."

Damian looked over his shoulder, his eyes wide with an agony of relief. Seeing me standing, unbroken, he turned his full, terrifying attention back to the bleeding mercenary at his feet.

"Viktor," Damian said, his voice dropping into a subterranean register that sent shivers down my spine. "Secure the perimeter. Bring the medical kit and the truth serums. I want to know every name, every safehouse, and every mole in our network before the sun rises."

He turned the man over, searching his tactical vest, and pulled out an encrypted comms tablet.

The screen lit up with a single, unread message from an internal contact marked *Echo-1*:

*The girl and the boy are in the main lodge. Finish them before Vance returns from the dock.*

The IP address of *Echo-1* traced directly back to the mainframe inside Damian’s personal penthouse at Lake Shore Drive. The traitor wasn't an outsider.

The traitor lived inside the inner sanctum of our home.
