Chapter 20 - The Shattered Threshold

Damian dropped to his knees beside us, his fingers pressing against Luca’s neck. "Call Dr. Evans immediately! Get the pediatric crash kit into the parlor now!" he roared down the hallway.

Viktor sprinted toward the medical bay on the third floor as Damian gathered Luca into his arms, racing toward the sofa. Luca was convulsing slightly, tiny beads of sweat rolling down his forehead, his breath rattling in his small chest.

"How is this possible?" I cried, my hands trembling as I unbuttoned Luca’s collar to give him air. "We didn't eat anything at the lodge! He only had—"

I stopped dead.

*He only had the marshmallows.*

The unopened box of artisan marshmallows that had been delivered to the Wisconsin lodge as part of the weekly grocery provision. The provision that had cleared the Lake Shore Drive supply terminal under Marcus’s digital clearance stamp.

It wasn't an explosive. It wasn't a bullet. It was a slow-acting, micro-dosed synthetic neurotoxin designed to mimic an acute allergic respiratory collapse—calculated to strike hours after ingestion.

Dr. Evans burst into the room with two trauma nurses, brandishing an automated syringe of broad-spectrum antidote and an oxygen respirator. "Step back, Mr. Vance! Move!"

For the first time since I had met him, Damian Vance looked completely paralyzed. The invincible tyrant who ruled Chicago with an iron fist stood frozen, watching the medical team thrust a needle into his son’s thigh.

I grabbed Damian’s hand, lacing my fingers through his with crushing force. "He is strong, Damian. He survived Bellamy House. He will survive this. Look at me!"

Damian looked at me, the pupils of his eyes dilated with sheer, unadulterated terror. "Emma..."

"He will survive," I repeated, tears streaming down my face.

Suddenly, the red emergency sirens embedded in the penthouse ceiling began to wail, flashing blinding crimson light across the marble floors.

The intercom on the wall crackled to life with static, followed by the frantic voice of the ground-level gate captain:

*"Boss! We have a breach at the main gates! Three armored trucks just rammed the outer barricade! They have heavy ordnance—they're blowing through the lobby doors!"*

Before Damian could respond, the master screens in the parlor flickered. The camera feeds of the street went entirely dark, replaced by a single, high-definition live video feed.

On the screen was not Marcus. It was not a faceless mercenary.

It was Stefano Rossi, sitting behind a polished desk in what appeared to be a mobile command vehicle parked just blocks away on Michigan Avenue.

Beside Stefano sat a woman in her early thirties, with sharp, beautiful features, raven-black hair, and cold, calculating eyes that bore an unmistakable resemblance to Luca’s.

Damian’s breath caught in his throat, a sound like tearing silk.

"Gianna?" Damian whispered, his voice shattering into absolute disbelief. "You're... you died six years ago..."

On the screen, the woman smiled—a cruel, triumphant sneer that sent ice through my veins.

May you like

"Hello, Damian," the woman said into the microphone. "Did you really think a Vance could bury a Rossi so easily? I've come back to take my son. And your new little songbird... is going to bleed on my floor."

A deafening explosion rocked the lower floors of the penthouse tower, rattling the crystal chandeliers and plunging the hallway into darkness as the sound of automatic gunfire echoed up the elevator shaft.
