Chapter 9 - The Promise

Midnight had passed, and the Grand Ballroom had emptied of its guests, leaving behind only the soft ambient glow of the wall sconces and the faint scent of fresh roses.

Ava sat on the edge of the runway stage, her heels off, drinking a glass of sparkling water while looking out over the quiet room.

Niko walked over, holding two glasses of champagne. He sat down on the stage beside her, handing her one of the crystal flutes.

"To Eleanor Monroe," Niko said, raising his glass.

"To my mother," Ava agreed softly, clinking her glass against his. "And to the man who gave me his coat."

Niko took a slow sip, looking out at the empty room where his father's company had operated for thirty years.

"My father used to say that power is measured by how much people fear you," Niko remarked quietly. "For a long time, I believed him. I built this empire on intimidation, strategy, and absolute control."

He turned to look at Ava, his dark eyes glowing with a warmth that few people in the world had ever been allowed to see.

"Then I saw you stand on that stage seven months ago," he continued softly. "Your dress was torn, your family had betrayed you, and three hundred people were watching you fail. And yet, you didn't cry. You didn't break. You held your chin up and faced them with more dignity than anyone in this room possessed."

Niko reached out, taking her glass and setting it down on the floorboards beside his own. He took both of her hands in his, holding them gently.

"That night, I realized what real strength looked like," Niko said, his voice dropping into a deep, intimate register. "And I knew I was never going to let anyone hurt you again."

Ava felt a lump form in her throat, her heart beating with a sweet, heavy rhythm against her ribs. "Niko..."

Niko reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined ring box. He opened it slowly.

Inside sat a custom-crafted platinum ring set with a flawless emerald-cut diamond, flanked on either side by two microscopic black roses carved into the setting.

"Ava Monroe," Niko said softly, looking directly into her eyes. "You built your empire with your own hands. You restored your mother's name, and you conquered this city without ever compromising who you are. I don't offer you protection anymore, because you don't need it. I offer you my partnership, my loyalty, and my heart for the rest of my life."

Tears glistened in Ava's eyes, bright and clear as diamonds under the warm lights.

"Will you marry me?" Niko asked.

Ava looked down at the ring, then up at the man who had reshaped her world not by breaking her, but by giving her the room to soar.

"Yes," Ava whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Niko. Absolute yes."

May you like

Niko slipped the ring onto her finger—a perfect fit. He leaned in, placing his hand gently behind her neck, and pulled her close, resting his forehead against hers before kissing her softly, deeply, with all the quiet intensity that defined everything he did.

Outside the high arched windows of the Aurelia, the city lights flickered against the night sky, bright, vast, and full of endless promise.
