Chapter 2 - The Wheels in Motion

The line went silent for three seconds after I uttered those words into the receiver. When Arthur Vance spoke, his voice carried the terrifying, resonant calm of an apex predator that had spent forty years sending corrupt politicians, cartel bosses, and untouchable billionaires to maximum-security prisons.

"Stay by Chloe’s door, Eleanor," my father said, his tone measuring out steel. "Do not speak to Mark. Do not sign anything presented by hospital administration until my people arrive. I am calling the Director of State Police and the Chief of Neurosurgery at University Central right now."

"Dad, they were laughing," I choked out, the hot tears finally scalding my cheeks in the dark hospital parking lot. "Amanda pushed her off the terrace like she was sweeping away dust. Mark told me to stop causing a scene because his mother hadn't finished her toast."

"They believe their wealth creates a sovereign border around their lives," Arthur replied smoothly, though I could hear the papers rustling on his desk and the urgent chime of a secondary secure line. "They are about to discover that the state of New York does not recognize the monarchy of the Sterling family. I am en route with a tactical escort. Keep your eyes on my granddaughter."

The call ended. I stood under the flickering amber halogen light of the hospital bay, shivering despite the balmy summer night. My phone vibrated violently against my palm. It was Mark.

I answered, pressing the glass to my ear without speaking.

"Where the hell did you take her, Eleanor?" Mark’s voice was thick with expensive bourbon, edged with the petulant fury of a man who had never been told no. "Mother is completely humiliated. Half the guests saw the paramedics dragging that girl out through the garden path. Do you have any idea how much this dinner cost? Amanda is upstairs crying her eyes out because you screamed at her."

"Amanda pushed an eighteen-year-old girl onto jagged sea boulders, Mark," I whispered, my voice devoid of tremor.

"Chloe slipped!" Mark snarled. "She had no business hovering near the stone balustrade in high heels. Amanda was merely trying to step around her. You’re turning an unfortunate accident into a melodramatic witch hunt because you've always resented my sister’s poise. Return to the estate immediately. Mother demands an apology before the dessert course."

"The surgeon is cutting Chloe's skull open right now to relieve intracranial pressure," I said, each syllable deliberate.

"Stop exaggerating," he scoffed. "She’s resilient. Kids bounce back. If you aren't back here in twenty minutes to smooth things over with the board members in attendance, I will cancel your platinum cards before sunrise."

I hung up without another breath. As I stepped back through the double automated doors of the trauma center, two unmarked black SUVs with flashing emergency strobes in their grilles skidded to a halt at the ambulance bay. Four men in tailored dark suits emerged, flanked by Captain Martinez of the State Police Major Crimes Division.
