Chapter 4 - The Brink of Life

Back at Saint Jude’s Trauma Hospital, the red light above Operating Room 3 finally extinguished after four excruciating hours. The pneumatic doors hissed open, and Dr. Evans emerged, stripping off his bloodied surgical gown and blue cap. His brow was furrowed with severe exhaustion.

"Eleanor?"

I stood up instantly, my father Arthur standing solidly behind my left shoulder like an immovable fortress. Two federal marshals guarded the corridor entrance, turning away every stranger who attempted to enter the ICU wing.

"She survived the craniotomy," Dr. Evans said quietly, his voice heavy with caution. "We evacuated a massive subdural hematoma and repaired three shattered ribs that had punctured her left lung. Her spleen was lacerated, but we managed to preserve it. However, the cerebral edema is profound. We have placed Chloe into a medically induced coma to allow the brain tissue to rest."

"Will she wake up, Doctor?" I asked, my fingernails digging into my palms until they bled.

"The next forty-eight hours are critical," he answered honestly. "If the intracranial pressure remains stable, we have hope. But her body took a cataclysmic impact on those granite boulders. It is a miracle she survived the fall at all."

Before I could reply, the elevator doors at the end of the hall chimed. Out stepped Julian Vance, my father's former protégé, followed by two stern men in charcoal suits.

"Mr. Vance," Julian said, giving Arthur a brief nod of deference. "We just intercepted the Sterling family's corporate counsel, Richard Vance-Cross—no relation—attempting to access the hospital's private servers to acquire the preliminary intake report. They were trying to draft an affidavit claiming Chloe was visibly intoxicated upon admission."

A terrifying smile crossed my father’s face. "Did they?"

"Yes, sir. But Detective Miller had already secured the toxicology screen at the scene of the trauma. Chloe's blood alcohol content was exactly zero point zero zero. She had nothing in her system except water and orange juice."

"Have the hospital lock down Chloe’s medical records under federal HIPAA protective sealing," Arthur ordered calmly. "And Julian?"

"Yes, sir?"

"Instruct the financial task force to begin auditing Sterling Capital's offshore trusts. If they wish to play with affidavits, we shall dismantle their treasury stone by stone."

I walked into the intensive care unit. Chloe looked so small beneath the maze of ventilators, arterial lines, and monitors beep-beeping in cold synchronization. Her dark curls were shaved on one side, replaced by white sterile bandages and pressure monitors. I took her cold, swollen hand into mine, pressing it against my cheek.

"I will make them pay for every single drop of your blood, my darling," I whispered. "I swear it on my life."
