Chapter 9 - The Sterling Empire Falls

With Chloe conscious and able to provide a coherent sworn deposition to Detective Miller and the District Attorney, the legal machinery moved with devastating velocity.

At 2:00 PM that afternoon, federal agents flanked by the IRS Criminal Investigation Division executed simultaneous search warrants on Sterling Capital’s Manhattan headquarters, Mark Sterling’s penthouse, and the Oyster Bay estate.

Financial news networks broadcast live feeds of agents carrying hundreds of boxes of documents and server towers out of the Sterling Capital glass skyscraper. The ticker tape at the bottom of the screen read: *STERLING CAPITAL TRADING HALTED AMID MASSIVE FRAUD AND EVIDENCE TAMPERING INDICTMENTS.*

Mark was arrested again at his club, this time without bail, charged with felony obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and four counts of wire fraud related to the cover-up. Photographs of him being led out in handcuffs, his face red and hidden under his jacket, dominated every front page in the country.

Victoria Sterling was detained at JFK Airport while attempting to board a private charter flight to Zurich, Switzerland. Her passport was confiscated, and she was placed under house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor, facing federal conspiracy charges.

Arthur Vance sat in the corner of Chloe's hospital room, sipping black coffee while watching the news broadcast on the wall-mounted television with a look of quiet satisfaction.

"A house built on sand and cruelty," Arthur remarked, turning off the television with the remote control. "They thought their social standing was armor. They forgot that the law is an iron wall when properly swung."

"Thank you, Dad," I said, leaning my head against his shoulder.

"You don't need to thank me, Eleanor," Arthur said softly, patting my hand. "A man protects his daughter. And a mother protects her child. The Sterlings never understood loyalty; they only understood ownership. That was their fatal flaw."

In the bed, Chloe looked up at her grandfather with a small, tired smile. "Grandpa, does this mean I don't have to go to their boring Hamptons brunches anymore?"

May you like

Arthur chuckled, a warm, deep sound that filled the sterile hospital room. "Sweetheart, by the time we are finished with them, they won't even be able to afford the bus fare to the Hamptons."
