Chapter 7 - The Severing of Ties

Mark fell back a step, clutching his chest as if he had been struck with a sledgehammer. Before he could speak, a process server stepped out from behind a marble pillar and slapped a thick stack of blue-backed legal documents firmly against Mark’s chest.
"Mark Sterling, you have been served," the server declared clearly. "Action for absolute divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty, fraud, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, along with an emergency freeze on all joint financial accounts."
"Eleanor, you can't do this!" Mark cried, looking desperately at the papers in his shaking hands. "This is community property! We built this life together!"
"You built nothing," I said, looking through him as if he were made of clear glass. "You inherited a dying real estate empire from your father and used my private family trust to quietly prop up your bad investments while treating my daughter like an unwelcome parasite in your home. Get out of this hospital before I have the marshals remove you in restraints."
Mark looked at Arthur, then at the federal prosecutor, and finally back at me. Finding no pity, no weakness, and no leverage, he turned and fled down the corridor like a whipped dog.
Two hours later, Victoria Sterling arrived at the hospital, completely disregarding the police barricades outside. Dressed in a black Chanel suit and dark sunglasses, she swept into the private family lounge where I sat sipping black tea.
"Eleanor," Victoria began, her voice dripping with artificial warmth and maternal condescension. "Let us speak as mothers. Amanda is fragile. She has a delicate nervous disposition. A prison facility will kill her. Name your figure. Ten million? Twenty million? We will establish a trust fund for Chloe that will ensure she never has to work a day in her life."
I set my teacup down on the saucer with a quiet *clink*.
"Victoria," I said, looking her directly in her cold eyes. "Did you look at the rocks Chloe landed on?"
Victoria flinched slightly. "Eleanor, please..."
"There was blood on those stones, Victoria. Chloe’s blood. When I asked you to call an ambulance, you told your butler to bring another bottle of champagne and complained that the sirens would scare the swans in your pond."
"I was in shock!" Victoria protested, her composure slipping. "You cannot hold a family responsible for panic!"
"You weren't in shock. You were indifferent. You believe that anyone outside your bloodline is cattle." I stood up and walked toward the door. "Amanda is going to state prison. And as for you, Victoria... the Securities and Exchange Commission just raided your private family foundation. It turns out that your 'charity galas' were laundering Amanda's tax evasions for the last seven years."
Victoria’s jaw dropped. The dark sunglasses slipped down her nose, revealing eyes wide with visceral panic. "You... you wouldn't dare."

"Watch me," I said, closing the door behind me and leaving her alone in the cold silence of the hospital corridor.
