Chapter 7 - The Trial

Two months later, the Federal District Courthouse was packed to capacity for the sentencing hearing of United States v. Richard and Victoria Whitmore.

The trial had been swift, devastating, and thoroughly publicized. With Dean Vance leading the prosecution's civil asset team and federal attorneys presenting mountain ranges of forensic financial evidence provided by Anthony Monroe, the Whitmores had no defense left to offer.

Ava sat in the front row of the gallery, wearing a tailored charcoal coat dress with her black rose key pendant gleaming clearly against her neck. Niko sat beside her, his arm resting comfortably behind her on the wooden bench, a constant, silent wall of support.

Across the courtroom, sitting at the defense table in bright orange prison uniforms, were Richard and Victoria Whitmore. Beside them sat Bianca, who had been stripped of her trust fund and forced to move into a tiny rented apartment on the outer edge of the city after being named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the foundation fraud scheme.

Bianca stared at Ava with eyes full of bitter, toxic jealousy, but Ava didn't return the look. She didn't feel anger anymore; she felt only a quiet, profound detachment.

Judge Rebecca Vance adjusted her glasses, looking down from the bench at the defendants with a cold, uncompromising gaze.

"Richard Whitmore," Judge Vance read aloud, her voice echoing off the high marble walls. "On counts one through fourteen—including federal wire fraud, grand larceny, pension embezzlement, and systematic corporate fraud—you are hereby sentenced to fourteen years in a federal penitentiary, followed by three years of supervised release."

Richard slumped forward, his face burying in his hands as a quiet gasp passed through the gallery.

"Victoria Whitmore," the judge continued, her tone even harsher. "For your primary role in the concealment of estate assets, tax evasion, and active participation in corporate fraud, you are sentenced to nine years in federal custody. Furthermore, the court orders total forfeiture of all personal property, real estate, and financial holdings acquired between the years 2020 and 2026."

Judge Vance turned her gaze toward the gallery, looking directly at Ava.

"All seized assets, including the full liquidated value of the Whitmore estate and commercial holdings, will be transferred immediately to the Monroe Educational and Design Trust, under the sole direction of Miss Ava Monroe."

The judge struck her gavel down with a sharp, final crack: COURT IS ADJOURNED.

As the gallery erupted into a flurry of hushed conversations and reporter chatter, federal marshals stepped forward to lead Richard and Victoria away in handcuffs.

As Richard passed the front row, he paused for a brief second, looking at Ava with sunken, tear-filled eyes. "Ava... please... I’m your father..."

Ava stood up slowly, facing him across the low wooden barrier.

"My father died six years ago, Richard," Ava said, her voice steady and quiet. "When he allowed Victoria to lock my mother's studio and erase her name from her own life."

Richard swallowed hard, his mouth opening as if to speak, but the marshal pulled his arm firmly, leading him through the side door into the holding cells.

Bianca rushed up to the barrier, her eyes red-rimmed and wild. "You think you won, don't you? You took my clothes, my house, my mother! You stole my whole life!"

Niko stood up beside Ava, his presence towering over the low railing, his dark gaze cutting through Bianca like a razor.

"She didn't take your life, Miss Whitmore," Niko said softly. "She simply stopped letting you live hers."

Bianca shrank back, unable to meet his eyes, before turning and running out through the rear doors of the courtroom into the hallway.

Ava took a deep breath, feeling the cool air of the courtroom fill her lungs. She reached down, picked up her leather handbag, and turned to Niko.

"Let's go home," she said.

Niko took her hand, folding his strong fingers over hers. "To the Atelier?"

"To the Atelier," Ava agreed with a soft smile. "We have a new collection to finish."
