Chapter 6 - The New Atelier

Four weeks later, the morning light poured through the arching floor-to-ceiling windows of a magnificent three-story brownstone in the heart of the city's fashion district.
The bronze plaque beside the double mahogany front doors read: THE MONROE ATELIER.
Inside, the space was a masterclass in elegant design. High ceilings, polished oak floors, and brass fixtures created an atmosphere of quiet luxury. The ground floor housed the private showroom, where Ava’s inaugural collection was displayed on custom mannequins under soft, warm spotlights.
On the second floor—in a vast, bright studio overlooking a private courtyard garden—Ava stood at a long cutting table, holding a pair of heavy brass shears.
Beside her, Elena was pinning a swatch of deep midnight-blue velvet onto a dress form, while three young apprentice seamstresses worked quietly at their pressing stations nearby.
"The silk shipments from Milan arrived twenty minutes early, Miss Monroe," Elena noted cheerfully, setting down her pincushion. "And Mr. Moretti’s security team has finished installing the new private lift in the rear foyer."
Ava smiled, making a smooth, precise cut through a roll of ivory silk. "Tell Niko he doesn't need to send four security men every time a delivery truck arrives. The Whitmores are currently awaiting trial in a federal holding facility."
"Mr. Moretti doesn't send them to protect you from the Whitmores," Elena replied with a knowing smile. "He sends them because he doesn't like anyone coming into this building without his approval."
Before Ava could reply, the private lift doors at the end of the studio chimed softly, and Niko Moretti stepped out onto the second-floor landing.
He had discarded his formal suit jacket, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking relaxed and completely at home in her studio. He carried a small velvet box in his right hand.
"Elena," Niko said smoothly. "Take the girls downstairs for coffee. Give us ten minutes."
"Of course, Mr. Moretti," Elena said, quickly ushering the three apprentices toward the stairs.
Ava set her brass shears down on the cutting table, wiping her hands on her linen apron as Niko walked over to her.
"You look busy," he said, looking around the bright, bustling studio with evident satisfaction.
"We have thirty-eight private trunk show orders to fulfill before the Paris showcase next month," Ava said, a slight flush of excitement warming her cheeks. "The press is calling the Monroe line the most anticipated debut of the decade."
"They're wrong," Niko said quietly, stopping beside her table.
Ava tilted her head. "Wrong?"
"It’s not a debut," Niko said, reaching out to gently touch the silver thimble resting on her thumb. "It’s a restoration."
He set the velvet box down on the cutting table between them.
Ava looked at the box, then up at his dark, intent eyes. "What is this?"
"Open it," he invited softly.
Ava unlatched the silver clasp and lifted the lid. Inside, resting on a bed of black velvet, was a stunning, handcrafted pendant made of solid gold. In the center was a perfectly cut black diamond, surrounded by tiny, delicate petals shaped into the exact form of Eleanor Monroe’s signature rose.
And at the base of the pendant hung the original tiny gold key—restored, polished, and securely integrated into the design.
Ava caught her breath. "Niko... this is incredible."
"Your mother built that key to protect your past," Niko said, taking the necklace from the box and stepping behind her to place it gently around her neck. The cold weight of the gold settled against her collarbone, warm against her skin a second later. "I had my jeweler turn it into something you can wear into your future."
Ava turned around to face him, her hand coming up to rest over the black rose key. "Why are you doing all of this for me, Niko? You cleared my name, you liquidated my father's debts, you funded this atelier..."
Niko looked down at her, his expression softening into something rare, intense, and entirely real.
"Six months ago, Ava," Niko said softly, "I watched you stand in the Aurelia ballroom fixing other people's dresses while they treated you like a shadow. I saw a woman who possessed extraordinary genius, but had been taught by cruel people to shrink herself to fit into their small world."
He reached out, his fingers lightly brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear.
"I didn't give you this atelier, Ava. You earned it six years ago. I simply provided the coat to keep the cold away until you were ready to take what was yours."
Ava looked into his eyes, feeling a deep, profound warmth spread through her chest—a warmth that had nothing to do with cashmere coats or legal victories, and everything to do with the man standing in front of her.
"I’m ready now," she whispered.
Niko smiled, a slow, breathtaking expression that transformed his sharp features. "Good. Because the car is waiting downstairs. We have a dinner reservation at the Aurelia."
May you like
"The main dining room?" Ava asked, eyebrows raised slightly.
"The head table," Niko corrected her softly. "Where everyone can see you."
