Chapter 9 - The Legacy Restructured

One year later.

The Moretti Manor had undergone a complete transformation.

The security perimeter remained state-of-the-art, but the dark, oppressive atmosphere of the old estate had been replaced by light, warmth, and life. The grand ballroom, once the scene of a terrifying assassination attempt, was now the main hall for the David Carter Foundation for Scientific Integrity—a non-profit organization established by Dominic and Sophia to protect scientific whistleblowers and fund independent pediatric medical research.

On a bright spring afternoon, the estate gardens were filled with children from the local community attending the foundation's inaugural summer festival.

Sophia stood near the grand fountain, wearing a light blue linen dress, holding a tablet as she managed the event's logistics. She was no longer just the executive pastry chef; she was the Executive Director of the foundation, managing an endowment of over fifty million dollars provided by Moretti Enterprises.

"You're staring at the budget again," a voice said behind her.

Sophia turned to see Dominic walking across the lawn, holding two glasses of fresh iced lemonade. He wore a dark navy polo shirt and trousers, looking relaxed and younger than he had in years.

"I'm making sure we don't overspend on the pastry pavilion," Sophia smiled, accepting a glass from him. "Chef Jean-Luc wanted to import five hundred pounds of Belgian chocolate for the fountain."

"Let him," Dominic chuckled, leaning against the marble edge of the fountain. "Ethan and Lily would probably eat half of it anyway."

Across the lawn, nine-year-old Ethan and four-year-old Lily were running through the grass with a golden retriever puppy that Dominic had bought for Ethan's ninth birthday. Lily was laughing hysterically as the puppy chased her yellow ribbon.

"How is Ethan doing in his new school?" Sophia asked, her expression softening as she watched the children play.

"He's thriving," Dominic said, his eyes filled with quiet pride. "No more private tutors locked away in the manor. He's on the soccer team. He got his first B-plus in math last week, and he was thrilled about it."

Dominic turned to look at Sophia. The sunlight caught the golden highlights in her dark hair, casting a warm glow across her face.

"And you, Sophia?" Dominic asked softly. "Are you happy here?"

Sophia took a slow sip of her lemonade, looking across the vibrant estate that had once felt like a golden cage, but now felt like a home.

"For the first time since David died..." Sophia whispered, looking into Dominic's gray eyes. "I feel safe. We both do."

Dominic reached out, his hand gently covering hers where it rested on the marble fountain. "You brought light back into this house, Sophia. You and Lily saved more than just Ethan's life that night. You saved mine."
