Chapter 2 - The Shadows in the Manor

The heavy mahogany doors of the grand ballroom clicked shut with a metallic finality, sealed by armed security personnel stationed at every exit.

Dominic Moretti stood motionless under the massive crystal chandelier, his eyes fixed on the gold watch resting against his left wrist. It was an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore—a custom piece fashioned from eighteen-karat rose gold, featuring a unique, spiderweb-etched bezel and a dark sapphire movement casing. Only three such timepieces had ever been manufactured by the Swiss artisan house.

"Mr. Moretti?" Dr. Harris asked, his voice trembling as he carefully placed the glass vial containing the poisoned frosting sample into a biohazard transport pouch. "Should I notify emergency services?"

"No police," Dominic said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He raised his hand, halting the murmuring crowd. "If the local authorities arrive, news leaks. If news leaks, whoever orchestrated this vanishes into the night. We handle this inside these walls."

Sophia Carter pulled her daughter tighter against her chest. She could feel Lily’s small heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Sophia was a single mother who had worked as the Moretti family’s private executive pastry chef for less than six months. The job provided a generous salary, a cottage on the estate grounds, and stability for her daughter. Now, standing at the center of an attempted assassination, that stability threatened to shatter into a thousand jagged pieces.

"Lily," Dominic said, stepping slowly toward them. His expensive Italian leather shoes made no sound against the thick Persian runner carpet. He knelt once more, lowering his six-foot-two frame to eye level with the child. His silver-flecked eyes searched her face. "Look at my watch very carefully. Are you absolutely certain the man in the cold storage room wore this exact watch?"

Lily pressed her face into her mother’s neck before peeking out with one wide brown eye. She pointed a small, trembling hand. "The shiny yellow strap with the red line through the glass," she whispered softly. "He had a red line across his wrist."

Dominic’s breath hitched imperceptibly. The watch had a distinct, hairline crack across the sapphire crystal face—a hairline fracture caused six weeks ago during a heated argument in his private study. It was a detail impossible for a three-year-old child to fabricate.

"Dad?" eight-year-old Ethan asked, stepping closer to his father, his voice quivering with a mixture of confusion and horror. "That's your watch. You’ve been wearing it all day. You helped me open my presents this morning with it."

"I know, son," Dominic said quietly, standing up and unbuckling the leather strap. He held the timepiece in his palm, studying the heavy weight of the metal. "Which means there are only two possibilities. Either someone stole this watch from my dressing vault, used it, and returned it to my wrist without my knowledge... or there is another watch identical to mine in this house tonight."

The silence in the room stretched until it felt physically suffocating.

Dominic turned to Marcus Vance, his head of personal security and a former commander in the Italian Special Forces. "Marcus."

"Sir," Marcus replied, stepping forward with his hand resting near his concealed sidearm.

"Who had access to my primary residential suite between two o'clock and five o'clock this afternoon?"

Marcus pulled a slim, ruggedized digital tablet from his jacket and began swiping through encrypted access logs. "The master wing was locked under biometric protocol, Mr. Moretti. Only four keycards registered entry during that timeframe."

"Name them," Dominic commanded.

Marcus cleared his throat, his eyes flicking nervously toward the front row of high-society guests standing near the champagne fountain. "First entry was your personal assistant, Julian Vance, at 2:15 PM, delivering the printed guest list. Second entry was your brother, Julian Moretti, at 3:10 PM. Third was the master housekeeping staff, lead supervisor Elena Rostova, at 4:00 PM for evening turndown. And the fourth..." Marcus paused, swallowing hard. "The fourth entry was registered using your master emergency keycard at 4:45 PM."

Dominic’s jaw tightened. "Where was my master keycard at 4:45 PM?"

"In your coat pocket, sir," Marcus answered softly. "While you were hosting the preliminary wine tasting on the eastern terrace."

A cold wind seemed to sweep through the grand room. Someone had taken the master keycard directly from Dominic's coat while he was surrounded by eighty powerful guests, entered his private vault, retrieved his signature timepiece, poisoned his son's birthday cake, returned the watch to his coat, and slipped back into the party unnoticed.

"Check the security feed from the cold storage corridor," Dominic ordered.

"We already did, sir," Marcus said, his face grim. "The footage between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM was scrubbed. A digital loop was inserted directly from the main server rack in the basement."

Julian Moretti, Dominic’s younger brother and the vice-president of Moretti Enterprises, stepped out from the crowd, his face pale and contorted with indignation. "Dominic, you can't possibly believe someone in our family circle is involved in this! This is absurd! The child is three years old! She's confused! She probably saw a waiter with a gold watch and guessed!"

"A waiter wearing an Audemars Piguet with a cracked sapphire crystal?" Dominic asked, turning a piercing gaze toward his brother. "Julian, where were you at 4:45 PM today?"

Julian flinched, instinctively pulling the cuffs of his bespoke suit down over his wrists. "I was in the library, taking a call from our investors in Milan. You can check my phone records!"

"I will," Dominic said coldly. He turned to Marcus. "Gather everyone—family, guests, caterers, and domestic staff—in the main gallery. No one leaves. No one uses a mobile device. Anyone caught attempting to transmit external messages will be detained in the lower security cells immediately."

Sophia held Lily close, stepping backward toward the service entrance. "Mr. Moretti, if you don't need us, I'd like to take Lily to our quarters. She’s terrified."

Dominic looked at Sophia. His expression softened slightly, revealing a rare glimpse of genuine human warmth beneath his terrifying exterior. "No, Sophia. You and Lily stay near me. Whoever tried to kill my son now knows your daughter saw his face. Until I find him, she is the primary witness—and the primary target."
