Chapter 5 - The Secret in the Kitchen

The rain was deafening as Dominic, Sophia, and Lily emerged from the carriage house exit into the dense shrubbery bordering the eastern gardens.
The estate was illuminated only by periodic flashes of lightning and the flickering red lights of distant security alarms. Searchlights swept across the main lawn from two tactical helicopters hovering low beneath the storm clouds.
"Stay low," Dominic whispered, leading them through the shadowed archways of the stone arcade toward the rear entrance of the manor's service wing.
The service entrance led directly into the vast commercial kitchens—a sterile world of stainless-steel countertops, copper pots hanging from overhead racks, and massive walk-in refrigeration units.
The room was pitch-black, save for the blue light reflecting from the glass-fronted display fridges.
"Where is the tool kit?" Dominic asked, scanning the dark kitchen with his weapon raised, his flashlight beam low and focused on the tile floor.
Sophia hurried over to a row of wooden lockers near the pastry prep station. She pulled a brass key from inside her collar, unlocked the third locker, and pulled out a heavy black canvas bag. She unzipped it with trembling fingers, reaching past specialized piping nozzles and digital temperature probes until her hand brushed against cold metal.
She pulled out a small, rectangular silver case, roughly the size of a playing card deck, intricately engraved with a Victorian floral pattern.
"This is it," Sophia whispered, holding it out to Dominic. "David told me never to open it unless he failed to come home for three consecutive days. After his accident... I was so consumed by grief, I forgot it was even in here."
Dominic took the silver case, examining the smooth metal. Near the bottom clasp was a tiny biometric scanner—a micro-sensor no larger than a grain of rice.
"It requires a DNA match to release the mechanical lock," Dominic noted, placing his thumb against the glass. A tiny red error light blinked twice. "It's locked to David's profile."
"Or..." Sophia said, looking down at Lily, who was standing quietly beside her, holding the hem of her apron. "Or his direct bloodline."
Dominic looked at the small child. "Lily. Can you press your thumb right here for me, sweetheart?"
Lily looked up at her mother, who gave her a reassuring nod. The three-year-old stepped forward, pressing her tiny thumb against the cold glass sensor.
For two tense seconds, nothing happened. Then, a faint green LED illuminated beneath the silver casing. A soft click echoed through the quiet kitchen, and the lid of the silver case sprang open five millimeters.
Inside lay a micro-thin, high-density flash drive encased in transparent acrylic, alongside a folded piece of heavy parchment paper covered in dense chemical equations and handwriting.
Dominic carefully extracted the drive, shining his flashlight onto the parchment.
At the top of the page, written in bold black ink, were three names:
Julian Moretti — Logistics & Distribution
Dr. Arthur Harris — Chemical Synthesis
General Victor Vance — Consortium Procurement
Dominic’s breath caught in his throat.
"Dr. Harris..." Sophia gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "The family doctor? The man who tested the cake tonight?"
"Harris didn't test the cake to save Ethan," Dominic realized, his eyes darkening with absolute fury. "He tested the cake to confirm that the toxin had been successfully deployed. When Lily ruined the attempt, Harris pretended to identify the poison so he could secure the evidence before my team sent it to an independent lab!"
Footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway outside the kitchen doors.
"Search every room!" a voice shouted from the corridor—a voice that belonged undeniably to Dr. Arthur Harris. "The child has the drive! Find her and eliminate everyone with her!"
Dominic immediately grabbed Sophia and Lily, pulling them behind the stainless-steel prep island near the walk-in freezer.
"Dominic," Sophia whispered, her eyes filled with absolute terror. "What do we do?"
Dominic reached into his coat pocket, pulled out his primary smartphone, and inserted the micro-flash drive directly into the encrypted data port on the bottom of the device.
"I transmit the files," Dominic said, tapping the screen rapidly with his thumb. "This drive contains the complete ledger, the DNA target profiles, and the names of every consortium member. I am uploading it directly to the Interpol secure server in Lyon, France."
On the phone's screen, a progress bar appeared:
UPLOADING ENCRYPTED ARCHIVE: 12% ... 24% ... 38% ...
The heavy double doors of the kitchen burst open.
Dr. Arthur Harris walked in, holding an silenced 9mm pistol, flanked by four armed mercenaries carrying tactical weapons. Harris had discarded his medical coat; he now wore a dark rain jacket, his medical bag slung over his shoulder.
"Dominic!" Harris called out, his voice echoing off the stainless-steel walls. "Give up the drive! You have nowhere left to run! The entire estate is surrounded!"
UPLOADING: 52% ... 68% ...
Dominic stayed low, his handgun held firm in his right hand, his eyes tracking the reflection of the gunmen in the polished chrome of the oven doors.
"You served my family for twenty years, Arthur," Dominic called out, his voice echoing from the left side of the kitchen to disorient the attackers. "My father trusted you with his life. I trusted you with my son's life!"
Harris laughed—a dry, bitter sound. "Your father was a fool, Dominic! He let Moretti Enterprises sit on billions in cash reserves while the real power was being built in synthetic biotechnology! Apex Pharmaceuticals was the future, and your little brother was the only one with the vision to see it!"
UPLOADING: 84% ... 92% ...
"And David Carter?" Sophia screamed from behind the stainless counter, unable to contain her rage. "He was a good man! He was a father!"
Harris turned toward the source of her voice, his pistol raised. "David Carter was a hypocrite! He took our research money for three years until he realized what we were building, then tried to ruin us! He got exactly what he deserved on that highway!"
UPLOAD COMPLETE. TRANSMISSION VERIFIED TO INTERPOL CENTRAL COMMAND.
A bright green checkmark illuminated Dominic’s phone screen.
Dominic stood up from behind the stainless counter, his SIG Sauer aimed directly at Dr. Harris's chest.
"It's over, Arthur," Dominic said coldly. "The files are in France. Interpol has everything."

Harris’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated madness. "Kill them all!" he screamed.
Dominic fired.
