Chapter 4 - The Blackout

In the darkness of the command center, the sound of glass shattering and heavy boots echoing down the concrete corridor burst through the silence.

"Sophia! Get down!" Dominic roared over the sound of the blaring emergency sirens.

Emergency red backup lights kicked on two seconds later, casting long, crimson shadows across the steel walls. Dominic had already drawn his custom SIG Sauer P226 from his shoulder holster, stepping instantly in front of Sophia and the sofa where Lily lay awake, clutching her blanket in terror.

Marcus moved toward Julian, but the steel door of the command center was violently thrown open.

Three men wearing black tactical gear, night-vision goggles, and suppressed submachine guns burst into the room. The lead gunman didn't hesitate; he fired two quick rounds directly into the main control console, destroying the central server stack in a shower of blue sparks and acrid white smoke.

"Don't move!" the lead gunman yelled, his voice electronically scrambled through a voice modulator.

Marcus drew his weapon, but a burst of automatic gunfire forced him behind a steel filing cabinet. "Down! Stay down!"

"Julian! Get up!" the second gunman barked, throwing a spare tactical vest toward Julian Moretti.

Julian scrambled off the floor, his hands shaking as he pulled the vest over his head. He looked at Dominic with a mix of fear and manic triumph. "I told you, Dominic! You don't control this family anymore!"

"Who sent you?" Dominic demanded, his handgun raised, taking cover behind his heavy oak desk. "Who is funding this operation?"

"The people who really own Apex Pharmaceuticals," Julian sneered, stepping behind the three tactical operators. "Take the child! We need the witness destroyed!"

The lead gunman raised his weapon, aiming directly at the sofa where Sophia was crouching over Lily.

"No!" Sophia screamed, throwing her own body over her daughter as a shield.

Dominic stepped out from behind the desk, firing three precise rounds. The first shot struck the lead gunman’s tactical helmet, knocking him backward. The second hit the second gunman in the chest armor, driving him into the doorframe.

"Marcus! Cover the exit!" Dominic ordered, grabbing Sophia by the arm and pulling her toward the emergency escape tunnel behind the server racks. "Move! Now!"

Marcus opened fire, suppressing the remaining intruder long enough for Dominic, Sophia, and Lily to slip through the narrow steel doorway concealed within the wood-paneled wall.

Dominic slammed the heavy blast door shut from the inside, pulling a manual steel lever that dropped two concrete security pins into place.

The emergency tunnel was dark, cool, and smelled of damp earth and old concrete. It stretched six hundred yards beneath the estate grounds, leading directly to the old carriage house near the eastern gate.

"Are you hit?" Dominic asked, turning to Sophia as he pulled a high-powered tactical flashlight from his belt.

Sophia was breathing heavily, holding Lily tightly against her chest. "We're fine. Lily... Lily, are you okay?"

The three-year-old girl nodded slowly, her eyes wide under the beam of the flashlight. "The bad men had the white gloves," she whispered.

Dominic paused, looking at the child. "What did you say, Lily?"

"The men with the guns," Lily said softly, pointing toward the blast door they had just sealed. "They had the white rubber gloves. Just like the man who put the powder on the cake."

Dominic’s mind raced. The men who breached the bunker were professional mercenaries, dressed in full tactical gear—except for their hands. Beneath their tactical gloves, the lead gunman had been wearing thin, medical-grade nitrile gloves.

"A surgical team," Dominic realized out loud. "They aren't just hitmen. They're biological recovery specialists. They were sent to retrieve the unused toxin and eliminate anyone exposed to it."

"Why?" Sophia asked, her voice cracking as they hurried down the dark concrete corridor. "Why would anyone go to these lengths for a corporate takeover?"

"Because Apex Pharmaceuticals wasn't just developing toxins," Dominic said grimly as they reached a flight of metal stairs leading upward. "Three years ago, before I bought the company, Apex was awarded a secret defense contract by an international intelligence consortium to develop target-specific bio-weapons—toxins calibrated to attack specific DNA markers."

Sophia stopped on the stairs, her face turning pale under the flashlight beam. "Target-specific DNA markers?"

Dominic looked at her with an expression of profound gravity. "David... your late husband. He wasn't killed because he discovered financial fraud, Sophia. He was killed because he refused to complete the DNA targeting algorithm for the Thallium-PX compound."

Sophia felt the ground slip out from beneath her feet. "No... David was a food safety auditor..."

"That was his cover," Dominic revealed, taking her arm to steady her. "David was working directly with my personal intelligence team to expose the consortium inside Apex. Before he died, he placed a master encryption key inside a physical device—a device he hid somewhere inside this estate."

Sophia lowered her head, looking at her small daughter. "The silver box," she whispered.

"What?" Dominic asked sharply.

"When Lily described what she saw in the cold storage room," Sophia said, her voice trembling. "She said the man had a little silver box. I thought she meant the box containing the poison... but David had a small silver cigarette case that his father gave him. He kept it in his tool kit in the pastry kitchen!"

Dominic pulled out his tactical radio, switching to an encrypted frequency. "Marcus, do you read me?"

May you like

Static cracked through the small speaker. "...Dominic... primary system compromised... Julian escaped... heading toward the main house..."

"Marcus, listen to me," Dominic said, his voice hard as iron. "The objective isn't the estate. It's the pastry kitchen. Get Ethan to the panic room in the carriage house immediately. I am securing the package."
