Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Consortium

Six months later.

The Federal Courthouse in downtown Manhattan was surrounded by hundreds of journalists, news vans, and satellite trucks.

Inside Courtroom 4B, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Behind the defense table sat Julian Moretti, Dr. Arthur Harris, and twelve high-ranking executives from Apex Pharmaceuticals and Lombard Holdings, all dressed in navy blue prison jumpsuits, their wrists and ankles chained.

On the witness stand sat three-year-old Lily Carter, sitting on a booster seat so her small head reached the microphone. She wore a simple yellow summer dress and white shoes, holding a small stuffed rabbit in her lap.

Beside the witness box stood Sophia, holding her daughter's hand reassuringly.

The lead federal prosecutor, Amanda Vance, stepped toward the jury box. "Lily, can you look across the room and point to the man you saw near the cake in the cold storage room?"

Lily raised her small hand, her finger pointing directly at Dr. Arthur Harris. "The man with the mean eyes," she said clearly, her small voice amplified across the high-ceilinged courtroom. "He put the silver box on his finger and rubbed the bad powder into the sugar."

The court reporter tapped rapidly on her machine as low murmurs swept through the public gallery.

The defense attorney stood up, attempting to challenge the witness. "Your Honor! The witness is a three-year-old child! Her testimony is entirely inadmissible based on developmental capacity!"

"Overruled," the judge declared firmly, slamming his wooden gavel down. "The physical evidence retrieved from the defendant's office—specifically the Thallium-PX residue matching the sample provided by the witness's preliminary identification—corroborates her testimony entirely. Sit down, counsel."

Across the aisle, Dominic Moretti sat in the front row of the gallery, dressed in a dark suit, his arm resting around eight-year-old Ethan's shoulders.

Dominic looked at his brother Julian. Julian refused to meet his eyes, staring down at the polished oak table in shame.

Two days later, the jury returned with a unanimous verdict: guilty on all counts, including conspiracy to commit murder, biological weapons trafficking, and corporate treason.

Julian Moretti was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole at a federal maximum-security facility in Colorado. Dr. Arthur Harris received a life sentence plus forty years.

As the defendants were led out of the courtroom in chains, Julian stopped briefly near the bar partition, looking at Dominic one last time.

"Dominic..." Julian whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I'm sorry..."

Dominic looked at his younger brother for three long seconds. "I forgave you as my brother, Julian," Dominic said quietly. "But as a father, I can never see you again."

Julian was led away, the heavy iron doors closing behind him forever.
