Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Betrothal

Alessandro walked down the grand marble staircase with the measured, terrifying grace of an apex predator. Behind him, Salvatore and six armed guards flanked the perimeter, their hands resting loosely near their concealed sidearms.
Standing in the center of the grand entryway was Elena Falcone. She was a vision of cold, aristocratic elegance, wrapped in an ivory cashmere trench coat, her raven hair coiffed into an immaculate chignon, diamonds glistening at her ears. Yet beneath the veneer of high-society royalty, her sharp green eyes flickered with venomous anticipation.
“Alessandro, darling,” Elena purred, stepping forward as though to press a cheek against his. “Your guards actually made me wait at the perimeter gate. Can you imagine the humiliation? As if I were a common vendor rather than your future bride.”
Alessandro did not lean down. He stopped three feet away, towering over her, his presence suffocating the airy warmth of the foyer. “You are lucky they only made you wait, Elena.”
Her smile faltered, just for an instant, before reassembling into a mask of petulant charm. “Whatever do you mean? I came to bring the platinum band we chose in Milan. And to check on you. Word on the street is that there was violence in the lower quarter last night. Some low-rent apartment complex burned down. Tragic, really, but hardly our concern.”
“The lower quarter,” Alessandro repeated, his tone devoid of inflection. “A small apartment where a mother and her four-year-old daughter were nearly slaughtered by hitmen carrying weapons registered to an export firm owned by your brother.”
Elena’s expression froze. The air in the foyer turned to ice. She slowly lowered her designer leather handbag, her gaze narrowing into slits of pure, vindictive malice. The sweet, cultured heiress vanished, replaced by the ruthless daughter of Don Falcone.
“You brought them here, didn't you?” Elena hissed, dropping the facade entirely. “You dragged that pathetic little clerk and her bastard brat into the Moretti ancestral estate! How dare you disgrace me like this, Alessandro? We announce our union to the Five Families, and within forty-eight hours, you harbor your dirty little secret under our marital roof!”
“Chiara is not a secret,” Alessandro stated coldly. “And she is far more honorable than anyone bearing the Falcone bloodline.”
“She is a nobody!” Elena spat, her chest heaving with rage. “She was an auditor who pried her nose into ledgers that didn't belong to her! She was going to ruin everything my father built, and you think you can protect her? Our marriage unites the north and south territories. Without my family, the commission will tear you apart!”
Alessandro reached into his inner breast pocket. He withdrew the velvet jeweler’s box that held the five-carat diamond engagement ring he had intended to seal their alliance with. Without breaking eye contact, he opened the box, took the glittering platinum ring between his thumb and index finger, and dropped it onto the marble floor.
It bounced with a sharp, hollow ping and rolled to Elena’s designer heels.

“Take your ring,” Alessandro said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper that promised blood. “Tell your father the alliance is dead. And if you so much as whisper Chiara’s name again, I will raze the Falcone estate to the foundation and bury you in the rubble. Get out.”
