Chapter 11 - The Wolf’s Den

The grand ballroom of the Continental Hotel glittered like a diamond-encrusted cage. Crystal chandeliers hung from vaulted gold-leaf ceilings, casting brilliant light over hundreds of figures clad in black ties, silk gowns, and priceless jewels. To the outside world, it looked like a gathering of the city’s most philanthropic billionaires; in reality, it was the governing parliament of organized crime.

A hush fell over the room the moment Alessandro Moretti walked through the double doors.

Dressed in a pristine midnight-blue tuxedo, his posture straight and his expression carved from granite, he looked every inch the undisputed king of the northern territories. Flanked only by his lieutenants Luca and Mateo, who carried no firearms past the council’s metal detectors, Alessandro walked directly into the lion’s den without a trace of hesitation.

Whispers erupted among the gathered elites. Across the room, Don Falcone—an aging, silver-haired patriarch with cold, calculating eyes—stood flanked by his daughter Elena. Elena was clad in a blood-red silk gown, looking radiant, though a spiteful smirk curled her painted lips when her eyes met Alessandro’s.

Don Falcone raised a hand, signaling for the string quartet to cease playing. The room went dead silent.

“Alessandro,” Don Falcone spoke, his voice booming across the polished parquet floor. “You honor us with your presence. Though I must admit, I wondered if you would have the courage to show your face after the grotesque dishonor you brought upon my household yesterday morning.”

Alessandro stopped ten paces away from the Falcone contingent. “The only dishonor in this city belongs to you, Falcone. And to the daughter you raised to be an assassin.”

Gaps of shock rippled through the audience. Several allied Dons exchanged uneasy glances.

“Mind your tongue, boy,” Falcone warned, his eyes flashing with deadly anger. “You cast away my daughter’s ring and accused her of fabricated crimes. You broke our blood pact. According to the ancient laws of the Commission, your territory is forfeit unless you offer full restitution and publicly kneel before my family.”

Alessandro let out a short, humorless laugh that echoed off the marble walls. “Fabricated crimes? I have the shipping manifests, Falcone. I have the manifests of the anti-armor missiles and plastic explosives you smuggled through terminal seven, stockpiled right now in your rail yard compound. You weren't building an alliance. You were arming a coup against the Council itself.”

Don Falcone’s face paled slightly, but Elena’s smirk only deepened. She stepped forward, her red dress rustling against the floor, and looked at Alessandro with utter triumph.

“You’re very clever, Alessandro,” Elena purred in a voice loud enough for the nearest Dons to hear. “You found the paperwork. You figured out the logistics. But you always were a fool when it came to sentimental attachments.”

Alessandro’s instincts, honed by a lifetime of violence, screamed an immediate warning. “What did you do?”

Elena tilted her head, her smile widening into something truly demonic. “Did you really think my father and I cared about this stupid council meeting? We knew you would come here to clear your precious name. Which means… your grand estate is missing its greatest protector tonight.”
