Chapter 12 - Breach at the Gates

Ten miles away, deep in the forested hills overlooking the city, the peaceful silence surrounding the Moretti estate was shattered by an explosion that shook the foundations of the earth.
The outer western security gate disintegrated in a fireball of twisted iron and concrete as an armored tactical truck rammed through the perimeter. Before the dust could clear, three black vans poured through the breach, disgorging heavily armed mercenaries in tactical gear, their assault rifles fitted with flash suppressors.
Upstairs in the private family wing, Chiara had just tucked Mia into bed. The thunderous boom rattled the heavy glass windows, followed instantly by the blaring, high-pitched wail of the compound’s emergency sirens.
“Mommy!” Mia shrieked, bolting upright in bed and clutching her stuffed rabbit to her chest. “What’s that noise? Is the thunder coming?”
“No, baby, it’s okay,” Chiara lied, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She scooped Mia out of the bed, wrapping her tightly in a thick fleece blanket. “We’re playing our game, remember? The hiding game.”
Footsteps pounded down the corridor. Chiara backed away toward the antique armoire, her hand finding the heavy bronze candlestick on the nightstand, prepared to fight for her daughter’s life.
The door flew open. It was Salvatore, a submachine gun slung across his chest and a tactical radio crackling at his shoulder.
“They breached the western wall!” Salvatore yelled over the din of automatic gunfire echoing from the courtyard below. “They bypassed the electronic grid—someone fed them our override frequencies! We have to move to the subterranean bunker now!”
Chiara didn't hesitate. She held Mia tightly against her chest and followed Salvatore into the hallway. The scent of ozone, burning sulfur, and spent gunpowder was already drifting up the stairwells.
“Where is Alessandro?” Chiara shouted as they sprinted toward the fortified east elevator.
“He’s at the gala! His comms are jammed—they deployed a military-grade signal dampener over the entire valley!” Salvatore fired three controlled bursts down the northern staircase as a masked intruder attempted to breach the landing. The mercenary collapsed backward down the stairs.
Mia buried her face in Chiara’s neck, weeping hysterically as the deafening cracks of gunfire reverberated through the stone corridor.
“Hang on, baby, keep your eyes closed!” Chiara pleaded, tears streaming down her own face as she pressed her daughter closer.
Suddenly, an explosion ripped through the end of the hall. The blast wave threw Chiara and Salvatore to the carpeted floor. Salvatore scrambled up instantly, firing blindly through the smoke at four advancing figures clad in black combat armor.
“Chiara! Crawl into the laundry chute alcove! Now!” Salvatore roared, returning fire as bullets chipped away the plaster walls around them.
Chiara dragged herself and Mia behind the heavy steel door of the service alcove. Through the crack, she watched in horror as two more mercenaries flanked Salvatore from the balcony above. A burst of gunfire tore through Salvatore’s shoulder and thigh, sending the loyal enforcer crashing to the ground in a pool of dark blood.
“Salvatore!” Chiara screamed.

Through the clearing smoke stepped the leader of the strike team—a hulking mercenary with a jagged scar across his throat, holding a silenced pistol. He kicked Salvatore’s dropped weapon across the hallway and looked straight at the alcove door where Chiara was hiding.
