Chapter 10 - The Gala Summons

The fragile peace shattered by nightfall.
The grandfather clock in Alessandro’s private study chimed eight when Salvatore entered without knocking. In his hand was a thick, silver-embossed envelope sealed with red wax—the crest of the Syndicate High Council.
Alessandro released the surveillance feed he had been reviewing and took the envelope. He broke the seal and scanned the handwritten letter inside.
“The annual Solstice Gala,” Alessandro muttered, his voice cold. “Tomorrow night at the Grand Continental Hotel.”
“Don Falcone called an emergency session of the Council,” Salvatore explained grimly. “He’s claiming you breached the peace pact by terminating the betrothal without cause and insulting his daughter’s honor. If you don't attend to answer the council’s formal inquiry, they will declare the Moretti family rogue and authorize open conflict.”
Chiara, who had brought a tray of chamomile tea into the study, paused in the doorway, her knuckles whitening against the silver handles. “It’s a trap, Alessandro. Elena knows you know about the weapons. They want to draw you into neutral territory where you can’t bring an army of your own men.”
Alessandro rose from behind his massive desk. “Neutral territory cuts both ways. The Council rules forbid weapons inside the ballroom. If Falcone tries anything in front of the other families, he breaks the foundational treaty of the syndicates.”
“Rules don't matter to people who are already staging a coup!” Chiara insisted, setting the tray down with a sharp rattle and stepping closer to him, her eyes wide with frantic worry. “Elena tried to burn my child alive. Do you honestly think her father cares about council bylaws?”
“I have to go, Chiara,” Alessandro said, his tone leaving no room for debate. “If I hide behind the walls of this estate, the council will interpret it as weakness. The neutral families will side with the Falcones, and they will siege this compound until nothing is left standing. The only way to stop this war before it destroys the city is to face Falcone publicly and expose his treason before the entire assembly.”
He turned to Salvatore. “Mobilize our inner guard. Salvatore, you will remain here with thirty of our best men. The estate must be an airtight vault while I am gone. No one leaves. No one enters.”
“Boss, let me go with you to the Continental,” Salvatore protested. “You can't walk into a council hall filled with Falcone loyalists with only two bodyguards.”
“I will take Luca and Mateo,” Alessandro said firmly. “Your job is far more important. You will protect Chiara and Mia with your life. If a single hair on their heads is harmed while I am away, you had better hope Falcone kills me, because you will not survive my return.”

Salvatore bowed his head in absolute obedience. “On my life, Don Alessandro.”
