Chapter 14 - The Unmasking

The cold, damp air of the ancient wine cellar smelled of mold, spilled vintage wine, and copper.
Chiara was backed against a massive oak wine barrel, her arms wrapped around Mia like an impenetrable shield. Her clothes were torn, her forehead bruised from a fall, but her amber eyes burned with feral defiance. In front of her, the scarred mercenary leader held a heavy zip-tie in one hand and his sidearm lowered in the other.
“Stop struggling, sweetheart,” the mercenary growled, taking a step closer. “The Falcone girl pays a ten-million-dollar bonus if I bring you and the kid to her personal yacht alive. Don't make me break your legs to carry you.”
“Touch her and I will tear your throat out with my teeth!” Chiara snarled, shielding Mia as the little girl sobbed uncontrollably into her chest.
The mercenary chuckled and reached out to grab Chiara’s hair—
A deafening roar ripped through the cellar.
A high-caliber hollow-point round shattered the mercenary’s knee from behind. The man let out an agonized howl, collapsing to the stone floor. Before he could turn his weapon, Alessandro appeared out of the shadows like an avenging ghost. He kicked the gun from the mercenary’s grip, stepped on the man’s shattered leg with crushing force, and pointed the smoking barrel of his 1911 directly between the hitman’s eyes.
“Alessandro!” Chiara gasped, her voice breaking into a sob of pure relief.
Alessandro didn't look away from the mercenary, but his voice softened instantly. “Chiara. Mia. Are you hurt?”
“We’re okay… we’re okay,” she wept, slumping back against the barrel, burying her face in Mia’s hair. “You came.”
Alessandro looked down at the mercenary bleeding beneath his boot. “Who gave you the security codes to bypass the outer perimeter grid? Elena doesn't have the technical expertise, and Falcone’s hackers couldn't crack my firewalls in a hundred years.”
The scarred mercenary choked on his own blood, letting out a wet, rattling laugh. “You think… you think this was just the Falcones, Moretti?”
Alessandro cocked the hammer of his gun. “Speak before I peel the skin from your bones.”
“Elena paid the bill…” the mercenary gasped, grinning through red-stained teeth. “But the codes… the codes came from inside your own house. From someone who sits at your private dinner table.”
Alessandro’s blood ran cold.

“And while you were racing back here to play the hero for your little archivist…” the dying man whispered, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction, “Elena’s secondary squad wasn't targeting this house at all. They just seized the secondary vault at the port authority. The council’s secret records… every single piece of evidence you had against the Falcones… is already burned. And the man who helped her do it is standing right behind you.”
Before Alessandro could turn, the heavy iron door of the wine cellar slammed shut with a deafening, mechanical clang, and the sound of an electronic deadbolt engaged from the outside.
