Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Hallway

“You don't need to thank me,” Alessandro said, his deep voice dropping to a gravelly murmur that seemed to vibrate in the quiet corridor. “In this house, under my roof, you and Mia are under my blood oath. What happened tonight should never have reached your doorstep.”
Chiara looked down at her hands, still trembling faintly despite the warm bath. “She wanted us dead, Alessandro. Elena… she didn’t just send men to frighten me. They had zip ties, heavy plastic sheeting, and silenced pistols. If Mia hadn't slipped out the laundry chute when the back window shattered—” Her voice broke, catching on a ragged sob she desperately tried to swallow.
Before she could pull away into the shadows of the doorway, Alessandro took a single, deliberate step forward. His large, calloused hand rose, hesitating for a fraction of a second before his knuckles gently grazed her cheek, catching a stray tear before it could fall. The warmth of his skin was an electric shock against her chilled numbness.
“Look at me, Chiara,” he commanded softly.
She lifted her amber eyes to meet his piercing, stormy gray gaze.
“Elena Falcone will never touch you again. She thinks her father’s influence makes her untouchable, and she believed my ring on her finger gave her dominion over life and death in this city. She was wrong.” Alessandro’s jaw hardened, the muscle ticking with barely restrained fury. “She made an enemy of me the moment she made Mia cry.”
Chiara’s breath hitched. For five years, she had lived on the fringes of Alessandro’s world, working quietly as a financial archivist for one of his shell companies, maintaining a quiet life in a modest brick cottage on the edge of the district. She had never asked him for money, never asked for his name, and never demanded a single concession from the ruthless Don of the Moretti Syndicate. She had only wanted peace for her daughter.
“Why did she do it now?” Chiara whispered. “You announced your formal betrothal only last week. She won. She had everything she wanted.”
Alessandro’s eyes darkened into black pools of lethal intent. “Because Elena found something she was never meant to see. And she realized that no matter how many rings I put on her finger, she would never own my soul. Sleep now, Chiara. My men are stationed every ten paces. Nothing enters this wing without dying first.”

He lingered for a heartbeat longer, his thumb brushing the curve of her jaw, before stepping back into the corridor. Chiara watched his retreating figure, the broad shoulders bearing the weight of an empire, before closing the heavy oak door and turning the deadbolt.
