Chapter 10 - The Gala of Light

One year after the wedding at Saint Jude Estate.
The annual Vance Foundation Gala was held in the very same Grand Ballroom. But tonight, the atmosphere was completely transformed.
There were no imported white orchids or two-hundred-dollar plates of caviar. Instead, the room was decorated with warm fairy lights, colorful local autumn flowers, and simple, elegant table settings.
The guest list was different, too. Alongside city officials and business leaders sat community leaders, construction foremen, local teachers, and families from the Southside Housing Initiative who had been invited as honored guests of the foundation.
Lily stood near the edge of the dance floor. She wore a stunning, simple emerald-green gown that fitted her perfectly—a gift from Sophia. But more importantly, her confidence shone brighter than any jewel in the room.
Sophia walked up beside her, holding a glass of sparkling cider. "Thinking about last year?"
Lily laughed softly, looking toward the heavy wooden doorways near the east wing. "I was just remembering how hard I had to push that door open to help an old lady in a wheelchair."
"And look where that door led," Sophia said warmly, resting her head on Lily's shoulder. "You changed hundreds of lives, Lily. My mother's apartment building got a brand-new heating system last month because of your foundation team."
"We're just getting started," Lily smiled.
The music softened, and the host stepped up to the microphone on the grand stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the host announced. "Please welcome the President and Trustee of the Vance Conglomerate, Mrs. Eleanor Vance, accompanied by the Executive Director of the Vance Community Foundation, Miss Lily!"
Applause erupted across the ballroom—loud, genuine, and resounding.
Lily walked up to the stage, escorting Eleanor as the older woman moved slowly using a silver walking cane instead of her wheelchair, her health and spirit visibly restored over the past year.
Eleanor took the microphone, looking out over the diverse, vibrant crowd.
"One year ago," Eleanor began, her voice steady and full of grace, "I sat in this room and felt deep shame for what my family had become. We had built tall buildings, but we had lost our foundation."
She turned, looking directly at Lily.
"Then a young woman walked into my life wearing a yellow dress," Eleanor said, a warm smile spreading across her face. "She didn't care about my title, my money, or my last name. She saw an old woman who needed help, and she offered her hand without expecting anything in return."
The audience listened in rapt silence.
"Tonight," Eleanor continued, "thanks to Lily's leadership, our foundation has repaired over forty housing units, funded fifty college scholarships for local youth, and restored the true purpose of the Vance name. I am proud to announce tonight that I am officially transferring fifty percent of my personal voting shares in the Vance Conglomerate to a permanent public trust managed by Lily and her team."

Gasps of awe and thunderous applause echoed through the ballroom.
Lily looked out at the clapping crowd, tears of gratitude shining in her eyes. She felt Eleanor's hand slip into hers, squeezing it tightly.
