Chapter 6 - The Emergency Boardroom

The morning after the wedding, the central high-rise building of the Vance Conglomerate sat under a heavy gray sky. Rain washed against the glass panels of the thirty-fourth floor, where the executive boardroom was located.

Twelve board members sat around a mahogany table, whispering nervously. Julian sat near the head of the table, his eyes red from lack of sleep, his hands clenching his tablet tightly. His mother, Victoria, paced near the back wall, wringing her hands.

At precisely nine o'clock, the double doors opened.

Eleanor Vance rolled into the room, dressed in a sharp black suit with a pearl brooch pinned to her collar. Behind her walked Marcus Croft, the family’s head legal counsel, holding a thick leather folder.

And walking beside Marcus was Lily.

She wore a clean, simple navy-blue business suit that Sophia had lent her for the morning. She held her chin high, carrying a notepad and pen, acting as Eleanor's personal guest and observer.

Julian stood up immediately, pointing an accusatory finger at Lily. "Grandma! What is she doing here? This is a private board meeting for Vance Conglomerate executives! She has no security clearance!"

Eleanor did not even glance at Julian as her guard positioned her chair at the absolute head of the mahogany table.

"Sit down, Julian," Eleanor said quietly. Her voice wasn't loud, but it instantly silenced the entire room.

Julian slowly sank back into his leather chair, glaring at Lily with burning resentment.

"Members of the board," Eleanor began, resting her hands on the table. "For the past three years, my grandson Julian has served as the interim Chief Executive Officer of Vance Real Estate and Development."

The board members nodded politely.

"During this time," Eleanor continued, "he has expanded our commercial portfolio significantly. However, late last night, I asked Mr. Croft to conduct an emergency audit of the community trust funds set aside for our low-income housing projects in the southern district."

Julian’s eyes widened in sudden panic. "Grandma, those accounts are managed by my sub-committee! An audit requires thirty days' notice—"

"An audit requires my signature," Eleanor interrupted coldly. "And I provided it at two o'clock this morning."

She gestured to Marcus Croft, who opened his folder and distributed thick white documents to every board member at the table.

"Over the last eighteen months," Marcus announced clearly, "approximately three point two million dollars intended for the maintenance and rent-subsidization of the Southside Family Housing units were diverted into shell companies registered under Julian Vance's personal associates."

Gasps erupted around the table.

"That's a lie!" Victoria screamed from the back of the room. "Julian would never touch those funds! This is a setup!"

"The paper trail is absolute, Mrs. Vance," Marcus replied calmly, pulling up a digital spreadsheet on the wall monitor. "The funds were used to cover margin calls on Julian's failed private investments in offshore crypto exchanges."

Julian slumped back in his chair, his face pale as paper, sweat breaking out on his forehead.

Eleanor looked at her grandson with deep sorrow and unyielding firmness. "You mocked Lily last night for her clothes and her background, Julian. You called her a nobody. Yet while you were wearing a five-thousand-dollar suit, you were stealing money from poor families who rely on our housing foundation to keep a roof over their children's heads."

"Grandma... please..." Julian stammered, his smooth composure completely shattered. "I was going to put the money back! I just needed a few more weeks!"

"You are relieved of all executive duties immediately," Eleanor declared, her voice resounding with finality. "Your corporate access is revoked, your company assets are frozen, and Mr. Croft is handing these files over to the District Attorney's office at noon."

"No! Grandma, don't do this!" Julian begged, stepping forward, but security guards immediately blocked his path.

"Take him out," Eleanor ordered quietly.

As Julian was escorted out of the boardroom in shame, his mother trailing behind him in hysterical tears, Eleanor turned her gaze toward the remaining board members, then settled her eyes on Lily.

"Now," Eleanor said softly. "Let us talk about rebuilding the integrity of this company."
