Chapter 4 - The Envy of the Gala

The seating rearrangement sent shockwaves through the Saint Jude Estate.

The head table, elevated slightly above the rest of the room and decorated with white orchids and gold leaf, was now occupied by Eleanor Vance, Sophia, and Lily. Julian and the other senior members of the Vance family were forced to sit at a secondary table below the dais, their faces thunderous with embarrassment.

As multi-course meals of poached lobster and aged tenderloin were served, guests couldn't stop looking up at Lily. The girl in the stained yellow dress was now chatting comfortably with the most powerful woman in the state, while high-society elites struggled to get a second glance from the matriarch.

"Eat up, child," Eleanor said, placing a warm roll onto Lily's plate. "You've been standing on your feet all evening while those fools made you feel unwelcome."

"Thank you, Mrs. Vance," Lily said softly, feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sudden shift in attention. "Honestly, I was just happy to see Sophia get married. Her family lived next to mine for ten years. We used to share winter coats when the heat went out in our building."

Sophia smiled warmly, reaching across the table to squeeze Lily's hand. "Lily's mother used to bake bread for us every Sunday. If it wasn't for her family, I wouldn't have made it through college."

Eleanor listened quietly, her sharp eyes softening with genuine affection. "Character isn't bought in a boutique, Sophia. It is forged in how we treat others when we have nothing to gain."

Down at the secondary table, Julian raised his glass, taking a heavy gulp of scotch. His mother, Victoria Vance, sat beside him, fanning herself with a silk menu card.

"This is absurd, Julian!" Victoria hissed under her breath. "Who is that pauper sitting in the seat reserved for the Senator? Your grandmother is making a laughingstock of our family!"

"Keep your voice down, Mother," Julian muttered, glaring up at Lily. "Grandma controls eighty percent of the voting shares in the parent company. If she decides to restructure the foundation board because she feels we lack 'morals,' we could lose millions in funding."

"Then fix it!" Victoria demanded. "Go up there and apologize to that girl. Offer her money, buy her a new dress, do whatever it takes to get your grandmother back on our side before the main toast!"

Julian gritted his teeth. He adjusted his silk tie, picked up a fresh glass of vintage wine, and stood up from his chair.

As he approached the head table, Lily noticed him coming. She felt a slight knot form in her stomach. Julian carried an air of arrogance that reminded her of the landlords who used to threaten her mother with eviction notices.

"Grandma, Sophia... Miss Lily," Julian said, offering a smooth, practiced bow. "I came to formally apologize for my earlier brusqueness. I was stressed about the event schedule and failed to extend proper hospitality."

He turned to Lily, displaying a tight, artificial smile. "Miss Lily, to make amends for the unfortunate accident with your dress, I would be honored to send my personal driver to escort you to an exclusive boutique downtown tomorrow morning. You may select any three gowns of your choice, fully billed to my personal account."

The offer was generous on the surface, but the tone behind it was clear: Take this bribe and stop making my family look bad.

Lily looked at Julian, then down at the dark stain on her hip. She smiled gently.

"Thank you for the offer, Mr. Vance," Lily replied calmly, her voice clear enough for the surrounding tables to hear. "But my dress served its purpose tonight. It kept me warm, it allowed me to attend my best friend's wedding, and it didn't stop me from helping someone who needed a hand. I don't need a new gown to feel complete."

Julian’s smile faltered, his eyes narrowing slightly as he realized his money couldn't buy her silence or her reverence.

Eleanor let out a sharp laugh of genuine delight. "Well said, Lily! Now, Julian, run along back to your table. You're blocking the light."
