Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Courtyard

By ten o'clock at night, the reception had transitioned into an open-air celebration in the grand courtyard. Fairy lights hung from old oak trees, casting a warm glow over marble fountains and manicured hedges.
Lily stepped away from the crowd to get a breath of cool night air. The constant attention from guests—who were now suddenly eager to introduce themselves and offer business cards—was exhausting. She knew their sudden kindness was fake, driven only by her proximity to Eleanor Vance.
She leaned against a stone balustrade near the fountain, listening to the soft splash of water.
"You really think you're clever, don't you?"
Lily turned to see Julian stepping out from behind a line of topiary hedges. His jacket was unbuttoned, and his expression was no longer polite.
"Mr. Vance," Lily said quietly, keeping her distance. "I was just getting some fresh air."
"Cut the innocent act," Julian said, taking two steps toward her, his voice low and toxic. "You saw an old woman in a wheelchair, figured out who she was, and staged that little rescue near the doorway to get her attention. It’s an old trick, but I have to admit, you played it well."
Lily felt a flash of anger, but she kept her voice calm. "I didn't know who she was. I saw someone who needed help with a heavy door."
"Right," Julian sneered. "And now you're sitting at the head table, turning down my offers of charity, making me look like a fool in front of our investors. Do you have any idea who I am? I run Vance Enterprises. A girl who lives in a rented apartment and works as a junior accountant doesn't belong in my world."
"I never asked to be in your world, Mr. Vance," Lily said firmly, meeting his gaze without flinching. "And judging by how you treat people, I'm glad I don't belong in it."
Julian’s face darkened. He stepped closer, towering over her. "Listen to me very carefully. My grandmother is old and sentimental. She likes sob stories. But once this wedding is over tomorrow, you are going to disappear back to your pathetic little life. If I catch you trying to manipulate my grandmother into putting you in her will or funding your little projects, I will make sure you never work in this city again. I have enough influence to crush your career with a single phone call."
Lily felt a chill run down her spine, but she refused to step back. "Threatening me won't change the fact that your grandmother sees right through you, Mr. Vance."
"Is that so?" Julian laughed softly, a dangerous edge in his voice.
"It certainly is," a crisp voice spoke from the darkness behind the hedges.
Eleanor’s wheelchair rolled into the light, operated by a sturdy, quiet security guard who had been trailing her all evening.
Julian went rigid, his face draining of color. "Grandma... how long have you been standing there?"
"Long enough to hear my grandson threaten a young woman because his fragile pride was wounded," Eleanor said, her voice trembling with restrained rage. "You think you run Vance Enterprises, Julian? You merely manage the operational branch because I allowed you to."
"Grandma, she was insulting our family—"
"Silence!" Eleanor commanded, her hand striking the armrest of her wheelchair. "You have proven tonight that you possess neither the heart nor the wisdom to lead this family's legacy. Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, I am calling an emergency board meeting."
Julian looked horrified. "Grandma, please! You can't do this over a nobody!"
"She is not a nobody!" Eleanor declared fiercely. "She has more honor in her stained dress than you do in your tailored suit. Leave my sight immediately before I have security remove you from the premises!"
Julian glared at Lily with absolute hatred before turning on his heel and marching back toward the main hall.
Eleanor exhaled slowly, her shoulders relaxing as she turned to Lily. "I am so sorry you had to endure that, my dear."

Lily walked over and knelt beside Eleanor's chair, taking the older woman's cold hands in her own. "Are you alright, Eleanor? You shouldn't stress yourself like this."
Eleanor looked down at Lily, tears brimming in her aging eyes. "I spent twenty years building an empire, Lily... and I spent the last ten watching my family rot from the inside out because of greed. Tonight, you reminded me that goodness still exists in this world."
