Chapter 11 - The Yellow Dress

Late that night, after the last guests had departed and the ballroom lights were dimmed, Lily returned to her small apartment in the city.
She didn't live in a luxury penthouse, though her salary easily allowed it. She preferred her cozy, sunlit two-bedroom apartment near the local park, where she could hear the birds singing in the morning.
She walked into her bedroom and opened her wooden wardrobe.
Hanging in the back, clean, freshly laundered, and carefully preserved in a clear garment bag, was the simple yellow dress she had worn to Sophia's wedding one year ago.
The crimson wine stain near the hip was gone—carefully lifted out by a delicate cleaning process—leaving the fabric as bright and golden as the day she had bought it.
Lily reached out, her fingers gently touching the soft fabric.
Her phone chimed on the nightstand. She picked it up and saw a text message from Eleanor:
“Thank you for walking through that awkward doorway with me, my dear. Sleep well. We have much work to do tomorrow.”
Lily smiled, a deep feeling of warmth and peace filling her chest.
She closed the wardrobe door, walked over to her window, and looked out at the city lights glittering in the quiet night.
A year ago, she had been mocked, ignored, and looked down upon by people who thought money was the only measure of a human life. But she had never let their cruelty change who she was. She had stayed kind, stayed humble, and extended her hand to someone in need simply because it was the right thing to do.

That simple choice had opened a heavy doorway—not just for Eleanor, but for thousands of people whose lives were now brighter because one girl refused to let the world make her cold.
Lily turned off the lamp, laid her head on her pillow, and drifted into a quiet, beautiful sleep, ready for the tomorrow she had built with her own heart.
