Chapter 10 - The Birth of Henry

Three months later.
The delivery room at Mount Sinai Hospital was quiet, filled only with the soft, rhythmic chiming of fetal heart monitors and the gentle morning light streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park.
Kathleen Reid had agreed to a full legal surrender of all parental rights in exchange for a federal plea bargain that dropped her kidnapping charges down to corporate conspiracy probation.
The court had appointed a legal guardian to oversee the remaining weeks of the gestational pregnancy, ensuring the baby received world-class medical care.
I stood beside the hospital bed, holding Lauren’s hand as the obstetrics team prepared the room for the delivery.
Mark was nowhere near the building.
A temporary restraining order kept him five hundred feet away from Lauren at all times, and his formal divorce trial was set to begin the following month. He was facing three years of probation and complete financial forfeiture of his share of their home.
"Push, Kathleen," the doctor instructed softly. "One more big push."
Lauren leaned over the side of the bassinet, her eyes shining with tears as a loud, clear, beautiful cry erupted through the delivery room.
"It’s a boy," the nurse announced, smiling warmly as she wrapped the dark-haired infant in a warm striped blanket. "A healthy, eight-pound baby boy."
The nurse walked over and set the newborn directly into Lauren’s open arms.
Lauren cradled her son against her chest, her body shaking with deep, quiet joy as she pressed her lips against his tiny, warm forehead.
"Hi," Lauren whispered to him, her tears falling softly onto his dark hair. "Hi, baby. I’m your mom. I’ve been waiting for you for so long."
I reached out, resting my hand over Lauren’s shoulder, looking down at my grandson’s tiny, perfect face.
"What’s his name, sweetie?" I asked softly.

Lauren looked up at me, a radiant, unbroken smile spreading across her face.
"Henry," she said firmly. "Henry Grace."
