Chapter 6 - The Highway to Newark

The rain began to fall in heavy, blinding sheets as Mark’s black SUV sped down the New Jersey Turnpike.
I sat in the front passenger seat, holding my phone ready with emergency contacts and the video files from the flash drive. Lauren sat in the back seat beside Rachel, staring out the rain-slicked window into the dark night.
Mark drove with both hands glued to the steering wheel, his face pale, his breath hitching every time the tires splashed through heavy puddles.
"How much further?" I asked, checking my watch. It was 9:45 PM.
"Twenty minutes," Rachel said from the back, tapping her phone screen. "Kathleen’s driver is scheduled to pick her up at 11:00 PM to take her to the private hangar at Newark Liberty."
"How did she get a private flight?" Mark choked out, looking in the rearview mirror. "That costs tens of thousands of dollars!"
"She wasn't working alone, you idiot," Rachel snapped. "Do you really think a twenty-eight-year-old surrogate came up with a high-level medical blackmail scheme by herself?"
I turned around in my seat, glaring at Rachel. "Who else is involved?"
Rachel swallowed hard, looking uncomfortable under my gaze. "Dr. Lawson."
The car went dead silent except for the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers.
"Lawson?" Mark gasped. "Dr. Lawson runs the most prestigious fertility clinic in the city!"
"Lawson’s clinic is three million dollars in debt to a syndicate group in Atlantic City," Rachel revealed bitterly. "He’s been running an illegal baby-brokering ring out of his office for two years. He targets high-income, desperate IVF couples like you and Mark. He intentionally sabotages their natural transfers, steals their viable embryos, and uses private surrogates like my sister to sell the babies to international buyers who pay top dollar on the black market!"
Lauren’s head snapped toward Rachel.
"My first two miscarriages..." Lauren whispered, her voice trembling with rising terror. "The treatments at Lawson’s clinic..."
"They weren't miscarriages, Lauren," Rachel admitted softly, looking down at her lap. "Lawson harvested your eggs, told you the transfers failed, and stored the healthy embryos in his private cryogenic facility. Mark didn't give Kathleen your last embryo six months ago... Lawson sold your embryo to Kathleen for an overseas client in South America who paid two hundred thousand dollars for a healthy boy."
Mark slammed his hands on the steering wheel, letting out a horrific, gut-wrenching wail of realization.
He hadn't just been a mastermind protecting his wife.
He had been the ultimate mark—a useful idiot who had willingly handed over hundreds of thousands of dollars to the very monsters who were stealing his family's future.

Lauren closed her eyes, resting her head against the cool glass of the car window.
"Faster, Mark," Lauren said quietly, her voice devoid of any emotion. "Drive faster."
