Chapter 3 - The Illusion of the Bump

The air inside the air-conditioned living room felt suffocating.
I slammed the heavy sliding glass door shut behind us, locking out the curious glances of thirty guests still standing confused in the sunny backyard.
Lauren stood near the sofa, looking between the paper in my trembling hands and her husband, who was frantically pacing back and forth across the hardwood floor like a trapped animal.
"Mom, what does it say?" Lauren begged, her hands shaking violently as she reached for the paper. "Tell me! What did Mark do?"
I couldn't bring myself to hand her the document. I couldn't bear to be the one to shatter what remained of her world.
"Mark," I said, my voice shaking with raw hatred. "You explain it to her. Or I call the police and tell them you’re holding us against our will."
Mark stopped pacing. He ran both hands through his hair, letting out a long, pathetic groan.
"Lauren... listen to me," Mark began, taking a cautious step toward her, his hands raised in a pleading gesture. "Everything I did, I did to protect you. You know how fragile you were after the third miscarriage! The doctors told us your heart couldn't take another failed round! They said your blood pressure was dangerously high!"
Lauren stared at him, her eyes wide with mounting horror. "What are you talking about, Mark? What does IVF have to do with this?"
"The third round failed, Lauren!" Mark shouted, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. "Three months ago! The clinic called while you were in the shower! The embryo didn't take! You were bleeding, you were crying every night, and I knew... I knew if I told you the truth, you would break completely!"
Lauren went completely still.
She slowly looked down at her own stomach—the gentle, visible curve beneath her floral maternity dress.
"No..." she whispered, taking a step back. "No, no, no... I felt the morning sickness... I had the fatigue... I bought the belly band... I went to the appointments with you!"
"I paid Dr. Lawson fifteen thousand dollars to go along with it!" Mark confessed, his voice cracking with desperate hysteria. "Every ultrasound you saw on that monitor was a pre-recorded feed from another patient! The hormone shots I gave you every morning? They were progesterone supplements designed to induce mild phantom pregnancy symptoms—bloating, fatigue, nausea!"
A terrible, agonizing scream tore from Lauren’s throat—a sound so raw and primal that it rattled the windowpanes.
She grabbed the fabric of her maternity dress, clutching her stomach as if trying to physically feel a heartbeat that wasn't there.
"You drugged me?!" she shrieked, collapsing to her knees on the rug. "You faked my medical care?! You let me believe I was growing our baby inside my own body?!"
"BECAUSE KATHLEEN WAS CARRYING HIM!" Mark yelled back, dropping to his knees beside her, trying to grab her shoulders. "I took our last healthy embryo—the male embryo from the second retrieval—and I hired Kathleen through a private agency six months ago! She’s six months pregnant right now, Lauren! With our son!"
I walked over, drove my foot straight into Mark's ribs, and shoved him violently away from my daughter.
"Get your filthy hands off her!" I screamed, pulling Lauren up into my arms as she wept uncontrollably against my neck.
"Who is Kathleen?" I demanded, pointing the paper at his face. "Who was the woman at the bakery?!"

Mark pulled himself up against the armchair, wiping blood from his lip where he had struck the coffee table.
"Kathleen is the surrogate," Mark rasped, his eyes dark and hollow. "And the woman at the bakery was her sister, Rachel. Kathleen isn't just carrying our baby, Grace... Kathleen is blackmailing me."
