Chapter 4 - The Blackmail at the Bakery

The USB flash drive sat on the glass coffee table like an unexploded bomb.

While Lauren lay curled in a fetal position on the sofa, her body wracked with quiet, terrifying tremors, I plugged the drive into my laptop. Mark sat in the corner chair, his head buried in his hands, watching the screen with hollow, defeated eyes.

The drive contained three video files and a folder of text message screenshots.

I clicked the first video.

It was recorded on a phone camera inside a dimly lit diner. A attractive woman in her late twenties with sharp features and bleached-blonde hair—Kathleen Reid—sat across from Mark, sipping an iced tea.

"You want your precious little son, Mark?" Kathleen’s voice came through the laptop speakers, sharp and cruel. "Then you’re going to pay me fifty thousand dollars extra before the delivery. Not through the agency. Directly to my offshore account."

"We had a legal contract, Kathleen!" Mark’s recorded voice replied, panicked and strained. "The agency escrow account has all your medical fees covered!"

"I don't give a damn about your contract," Kathleen sneered, leaning into the camera. "Your wife doesn't even know I exist. She thinks she's pregnant! Imagine what happens to your picture-perfect little suburban life when I walk into her gender reveal party and tell her that her husband paid me to carry his baby behind her back!"

The video cut out.

I stared at the screen, then turned to look at Mark.

"She knew about the phantom pregnancy," I realized, my voice cold as ice. "She knew you were lying to Lauren."

"Rachel—her sister—works as a receptionist at Dr. Lawson’s clinic," Mark confessed quietly, staring at the floor. "She found the altered records. She saw that I was paying Lawson under the table to keep Lauren fed with fake ultrasound videos. They had me trapped, Grace."

"So why the cake?" I demanded. "Why change the result to pink?"

"Because Kathleen wanted a girl," Mark said, his voice trembling. "When Kathleen found out the embryo was a boy, she became obsessed. She has two daughters from a previous marriage, and she wanted a girl to keep. She told me that if I didn't change the public reveal to 'GIRL' to confuse my family and buy her time, she would disappear across state lines to a non-extradition jurisdiction and keep my son."

"So you went to the bakery," I said, putting the pieces together. "You paid the baker five hundred dollars to make the cake pink... to satisfy Kathleen’s demand while you tried to figure out how to pay her the fifty thousand dollars."

"Yes!" Mark wept, clutching his hair. "I was trying to buy time! I was going to secure a second mortgage on the house this week to pay Kathleen off! I was going to wait until Kathleen delivered the baby in secret, bring him home, and tell Lauren that Dr. Lawson had to perform an emergency delivery while she was under sedation!"

I looked at my son-in-law—this man who had spent four years pretending to be the devoted, perfect husband.

He hadn't just lied.

He had built an elaborate, psychotic maze of deception, drugging his wife, bribing doctors, and yielding to blackmailers, all to protect his own cowardly pride.

"You didn't do this to protect Lauren," I said, stepping up to him, looking down into his miserable eyes. "You did this because you were terrified of looking like a failure. You were terrified that people would know your marriage wasn't perfect."

Before Mark could answer, a heavy, forceful knock rattled the front door.
