Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Network

By 2:00 AM, the quiet street in Newark was flooded with the flashing red and blue lights of twenty federal emergency vehicles.
FBI agents and state police officers swarmed the safe house, placing Dr. Lawson, Kathleen Reid, and Vance under heavy federal custody. Paramedics examined Kathleen on a stretcher before loading her into an ambulance to transport her under armed guard to the high-risk maternity ward at Mount Sinai Hospital.
I stood near the rear of my SUV, wrapped in a warm wool blanket provided by an emergency responder, holding a cup of hot coffee.
Beside me sat Lauren.
An FBI special agent—Agent Ramirez—stepped over, holding a digital tablet containing seized clinic databases.
"Mrs. Miller," Agent Ramirez said gently, looking at Lauren with deep respect. "We just raided Dr. Lawson’s private cryogenic storage unit in Manhattan based on the files we found in his briefcase."

Lauren let out a long, shaky breath, burying her face in her hands as silent, overwhelming relief washed over her.
Mark sat twenty feet away on the bumper of a police cruiser, handcuffed.
Two federal agents were taking his official statement regarding the illegal payments, the phantom medical care fraud, and his involvement in the black-market surrogacy chain.
He looked over at us through the flashing red lights—small, broken, and completely ruined.
He tried to meet Lauren’s eyes, offering a pathetic, pleading look of hope.
Lauren looked back at him for three long seconds.

Then, slowly, deliberately, she reached down to her left hand, pulled off her diamond wedding ring, and dropped it into the plastic trash bag sitting beside the SUV bumper.
She turned her back on him, looking out at the city skyline as the rain finally stopped.
