Chapter 8 - Shadows in the Holding Cell

In the basement holding facility of the county jail, the veneer of high society had completely vanished.
Gabriel Vance sat on a stainless steel bench, his bespoke Italian suit jacket discarded on the filthy concrete floor, his crisp white shirt stained with sweat around the collar. His hands were bound in steel handcuffs connected to a heavy belly chain. Across the barred corridor, in a separate isolation cell reserved for high-risk female detainees, Samantha Cross paced like a caged predator.
"You idiot!" Samantha hissed, her face blotchy from crying, her once-immaculate makeup smeared in grotesque streaks beneath her eyes. "You said you had Clara under control! You swore she was broken! You told me she would sign the stipulation, take whatever pennies you tossed her, and disappear!"
"Shut up, Samantha!" Gabriel snapped, his voice raspy and cracked. "Just shut your damn mouth! The guards can hear every word you say!"
"I don't give a damn about the guards!" she shrieked, gripping the cold iron bars with hands that were now red and raw. "They took my passport! They took my phone! Do you know what they found in my apartment? Everything! You told me those accounts were untraceable! You told me your offshore lawyers had ironclad privacy firewalls!"
"They did!" Gabriel shot back, rising to his feet and rattling his chains. "How was I supposed to know the little brat was snooping through your things? You were supposed to be watching her! You had one job—keep Clara isolated and make sure that child didn't wander around the house!"
Samantha let out a harsh, hysterical laugh. "You blame me? You were the one who brought her home from the agency! You said having a foster child would make us look charitable in front of the board while Clara was bedridden! You wanted the public relations points, Gabriel! And now that five-year-old street rat has destroyed everything!"
"If you mention her again, I swear to God—"
"You'll do what?" Samantha sneered, stepping closer to the bars, her eyes wide with venom. "You're a coward, Gabriel. You couldn't even look Clara in the eye when the judge read the evidence. You hid behind your lawyer like a frightened dog. And let me tell you something: if I go down for the medical tampering, I'm taking you with me. I kept every text message. Every voice memo where you told me to increase the dosage. Every single one."
Gabriel’s face drained of what little color it had left. "You... you recorded me?"
"Of course I did," she hissed, a terrifying smile stretching across her lips. "Did you really think I trusted a man who was willing to poison his pregnant wife? I knew what you were. I just thought you were smart enough to finish the job."
Before Gabriel could reply, the heavy steel door at the end of the corridor groaned open, and two armed deputies stepped into the hall, followed by Detective Jenkins.
"Samantha Cross," Jenkins announced, her voice flat and devoid of emotion. "Step away from the bars and place your hands behind your back. The District Attorney has just filed upgraded charges. Attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and aggravated child endangerment."
Samantha backed away, her arrogance vanishing in an instant, replaced by raw, paralyzing terror. "No... wait. Gabriel forced me! It was his idea! I have proof!"

"Save it for your arraignment," Jenkins said coldly as the cell door slid open with a deafening clang.
