Chapter 14 - A Whisper from the Past

By noon, Courtroom 4B had been cleared.
Judge Holloway had officially executed the final decree of divorce: Clara was granted one hundred percent of the marital assets, complete legal and physical ownership of all Vance Maritime properties, total restitution from Gabriel’s frozen personal accounts, and an immediate permanent protective order. Gabriel’s parental rights regarding the unborn child were legally and irrevocably terminated.
Before Gabriel was transferred to the state maximum-security facility to await trial, Clara requested five minutes with him in the secure attorney-client conference room.
Marcus was hesitant, but Clara insisted. "I need him to see me, Marcus. I need him to know that he failed."
Accompanied by Detective Jenkins, Clara walked into the small, windowless concrete room. Gabriel was seated at the bolted metal table, his eyes bloodshot, his face ruined by tears.
When he looked up and saw Clara standing before him—radiant, pregnant, unbroken—he couldn't meet her eyes for more than a second.
"Why, Gabriel?" Clara asked, her voice steady and calm, devoid of hatred, carrying only the absolute coldness of finality. "My father treated you like a son. He gave you a job when your own father cast you out. He trusted you."
Gabriel swallowed hard, his throat clicking. "He was going to give it all to you," he whispered bitterly. "Everything. The company, the shipping lines, the land. He looked at me every day and reminded me that I was just an employee. That I was lucky to be in the room."
"So you killed him?"
"Charles planned it!" Gabriel burst out, his chains rattling against the steel. "Charles said Thomas was weak! Charles said Thomas was going to sell the fleet to an overseas competitor! We only wanted the shares! But then Thomas put the company in that damn trust for you! We had to wait five years, Clara! Five years of pretending to love you!"
Clara took a slow, deep breath, feeling her baby kick gently against her ribs—a flutter of pure, innocent life.
"You never loved me," Clara said softly. "And you never broke me. You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet, because I gave you everything you asked for. But I wasn't surrendering to you, Gabriel. I was protecting my child until the truth could come to light."
She turned toward the door, knocking once for the guard to unlock it.
"Clara, wait!" Gabriel cried out, lunging forward as far as his chains would allow, terror filling his eyes. "You don't understand! Charles... Charles isn't the head of it! There are people in Chicago! The men who financed the buyout... if they lose that maritime corridor, they won't just let you take the company! They won't stop!"
Clara stopped at the threshold. She didn't look back.

"Let them come," she said quietly. "I am not afraid of ghosts anymore."
