Chapter 13 - The Fractured Alliance

The silence in the courtroom was absolute. You could hear the faint ticking of the wall clock, the quiet shuffle of bailiffs shifting their stance, the ragged, terrified breathing of Gabriel Vance.
Samantha Cross turned her head sharply toward Gabriel, her eyes wide with shock. "What plane logs? Gabriel, what is he talking about? You said her father died in an accident!"
Gabriel refused to look at her. His face was gray, his lips trembling, his gaze fixed on the mahogany tabletop.
"Your Honor," Marcus Vance continued, his voice cutting through the stillness like a scalpel, "the third signature belongs to Charles Sterling Vance—Gabriel’s uncle, and the sitting Chairman of the Vance Maritime Board of Directors. The very man who appointed Gabriel to CEO following Thomas’s death."
In the third row of the gallery, an older, distinguished gentleman in a charcoal three-piece suit quietly began to rise from his seat, reaching for his coat.
"Bailiffs!" Judge Holloway’s voice cracked like a whip. "Secure the doors! No one leaves this courtroom!"
Two armed deputies immediately moved to block the double doors at the back of the gallery. Another deputy stepped directly into the aisle, placing a hand on Charles Vance’s shoulder.
"Mr. Charles Vance," Judge Holloway said, her eyes burning with ice, "take your seat immediately. You are now a person of interest in an active capital murder investigation."
Charles Vance did not sit. His expression hardened into an aristocratic sneer. "This is absurd. A civil court has no jurisdiction to detain me based on wild allegations from a disbarred attorney’s imagination."
"I am not disbarred, Charles," Marcus Vance said quietly, turning to face him. "And this is no longer just a civil hearing. Detective Jenkins is standing outside with a federal warrant issued thirty minutes ago by the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota."
The double doors opened, and Detective Jenkins stepped inside, accompanied by four FBI agents in dark windbreakers.
Samantha Cross suddenly erupted into a scream of hysterical laughter, turning toward Charles Vance. "You! It was you! Gabriel was taking orders from you the whole time! You promised him the entire estate if he got rid of her!"
"Shut your mouth, you pathetic whore!" Charles hissed, losing his composure for a split second before the federal agents surrounded him, grabbing his arms and forcing them behind his back.
"Charles Vance," the lead agent recited, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate fraud, and interstate wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."

As Charles was pushed toward the side exit in handcuffs, Gabriel slumped completely onto the table, sobbing uncontrollably. His empire, his family, his freedom—everything had evaporated in less than twenty-four hours.
