Chapter 10 - The Doctor's Secret

At seven o'clock that night, forty miles north in an affluent suburb of Minneapolis, Dr. Richard Sterling was hastily packing a leather duffel bag in his master bedroom.

His hands shook uncontrollably as he threw stacks of hundred-dollar bills, two Swiss passports, and several prescription pads into the bag. On the television mounted to the wall, the evening news broadcast displayed Gabriel Vance’s corporate headshot beside a red banner that read: *HIGH-PROFILE MINNEAPOLIS DEVELOPER ARRESTED IN ATTEMPTED MURDER PLOT.*

"Damn it, Gabriel," Sterling muttered between clenched teeth, zipping the duffel bag shut with a violent tug. "You swore she would never ask for an independent review."

Dr. Sterling was Clara’s primary obstetrician—the doctor Gabriel had insisted she transfer to after she reached her twelve-week scan. Sterling was renowned, expensive, and a regular guest at Gabriel’s country club. But beneath his polished veneer, he was drowning in over two million dollars of unregulated sports gambling debts.

He grabbed his coat and hurried down the spiraling staircase to his two-car garage. He pressed the remote to open the garage door, tossing his bag into the passenger seat of his Mercedes.

As the heavy wooden door rolled upward, the darkness of the driveway was suddenly flooded by blinding halogen headlights.

Three unmarked police cruisers blocked the driveway completely, their blue and red emergency strobes cutting through the night.

Standing in front of the center cruiser was Detective Jenkins, her badge displayed prominently on her dark wool overcoat, her hand resting casually on the butt of her service weapon. Beside her stood two federal agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"Going somewhere, Dr. Sterling?" Jenkins asked, her voice echoing off the concrete walls of the garage.

Sterling froze, his keys slipping from his trembling fingers and clattering to the floor. "I... I have a medical conference in Chicago. What is the meaning of this?"

"The conference will have to wait," Jenkins said, taking a slow step forward. "We just finished executing a search warrant on your private server at the clinic. We found the altered ultrasound reports, Doctor. The ones where you systematically erased the markers of severe placental stress from Clara Vance’s weekly charts."

Sterling’s knees buckled slightly, but he caught himself against the hood of the car. "I... I made clinical misjudgments. The stress of the pregnancy was complex—"

"Save it for the grand jury," one of the federal agents barked, stepping forward with handcuffs drawn. "You received three wire transfers totaling six hundred thousand dollars from Aegis Horizon LLC over the last six months. In exchange, you supplied Gabriel Vance with pharmaceutical-grade compounds not approved for domestic distribution."

"I didn't know he was going to kill her!" Sterling cried out, his voice cracking into a panicked shriek as the cold metal clamped around his wrists. "He told me he just wanted her sedated! He told me he needed her incapacitated until the corporate proxy vote next week!"

Jenkins stopped, her eyes narrowing sharply. "What corporate proxy vote?"

Sterling looked up, his face as pale as death, realizing he had just said far too much.
