Chapter 11 - Reconvening Courtroom 4B

The following morning at nine o'clock, Courtroom 4B was packed to maximum capacity.
The media, tipped off by the dramatic events of the previous afternoon, occupied every available seat in the gallery. Armed bailiffs lined the perimeter of the room, their presence imposing and unyielding.
When the side door opened, Gabriel Vance and Samantha Cross were led in, both wearing bright orange Department of Corrections jumpsuits. Their ankles were shackled, forcing them to shuffle in slow, humiliating increments. Gabriel kept his head bowed, his eyes glued to the carpet, unable to meet the burning gazes of his former business peers seated in the gallery. Samantha looked hollow, her skin sallow, trembling with every step.
At the plaintiff's table sat Marcus Vance. Beside him, dressed in an elegant navy coat that draped gracefully over her pregnant form, sat Clara. Her head was held high. Her posture was straight, dignified, and unbroken.
Violet remained in the secure judicial chambers under the care of a county child advocate, spared from the circus of the courtroom.
Judge Holloway entered, her robes billowing behind her as she ascended the bench. She slammed the gavel down once. The sharp crack echoed through the chamber, silencing the murmurs of the crowd in an instant.
"Be seated," Holloway instructed coldly. Her gaze fell directly upon Gabriel and Samantha. "We are reconvening the matter of *Vance v. Vance*. However, in light of the criminal indictments handed down by the grand jury early this morning, the nature of these proceedings has shifted dramatically."
Gabriel’s court-appointed public defender stood up, sweating visibly. "Your Honor, my clients respectfully request an indefinite stay of all civil dissolution proceedings until the resolution of the pending criminal charges, pursuant to their Fifth Amendment rights."
"Request denied, Counsel," Judge Holloway snapped without hesitation. "Your clients gave up their privilege of procedural delay when they attempted to defraud this court with fabricated medical records and coerced testimony. We will proceed with the immediate distribution of marital assets, the dissolution of the marriage, and the immediate stripping of all parental and custodial rights."
Judge Holloway turned her piercing gaze toward Marcus. "Mr. Vance, does the petitioner have the forensic report regarding the physical assets located at the Minnetonka property?"
"We do, Your Honor," Marcus said, rising gracefully. "Late last night, execution of a secondary warrant yielded the personal safe of Gabriel Vance, located beneath the floorboards of his private study. The combination was provided to us by the minor child, Violet."
Gabriel’s head jerked up, his eyes widening in pure horror. "No..." he whispered hoarsely.

"Inside that safe," Marcus continued, his voice ringing with absolute clarity, "investigators did not merely find evidence of financial concealment. They found something far more damning."
