Chapter 12 - The Third Signature

Marcus walked over to the evidence cart, picking up a clear plastic evidence bag containing a bound legal contract with embossed golden seals.

"Your Honor, this document is an irrevocable master trust, executed forty-eight hours before the late Thomas Sterling Vance—Clara’s father—boarded his fatal flight five years ago," Marcus announced, turning so that the entire courtroom, including the press gallery, could hear every word.

Clara’s heart stopped. She looked at Marcus, her hands gripping the armrests of her chair. "My father?" she whispered, the air escaping her lungs.

"For five years, Clara Vance was led to believe that her father died insolvent, having lost his maritime shipping empire to overseas market collapses," Marcus said, looking directly at Gabriel. "Gabriel Vance claimed to be her savior, stepping in to pay off her father's supposed debts and marrying her shortly after the tragedy."

Judge Holloway leaned forward, her brows furrowed in intense concentration. "And what does the document demonstrate, Mr. Vance?"

"This document demonstrates that Thomas Vance never lost his company," Marcus declared with thunderous force. "He was blackmailed into signing over fifty-one percent of his voting shares. And in the event of his death, the entire trust was to be held in escrow until Clara reached the age of thirty—or until she gave birth to a biological heir."

A collective gasp swept through the courtroom.

"Gabriel knew this," Marcus continued, his voice rising in righteous indignation. "He knew that the moment Clara gave birth to a living child, the trust would automatically trigger an independent, third-party forensic audit of all Vance Maritime holdings. An audit that would reveal Gabriel had embezzled nearly seventy million dollars from the family business."

"That's a lie!" Gabriel shouted, struggling against the belly chains as he tried to stand. "She knows nothing about business! She was nothing without me!"

"Silence the defendant!" Judge Holloway slammed her gavel down, her face thunderous. "One more outburst, Mr. Vance, and you will spend the remainder of this hearing in the holding cell with a gag!"

Marcus didn't blink. He approached the bench, handing the document to the bailiff. "But there is a darker truth in this contract, Your Honor. The trust could only be transferred to Gabriel outright under one specific legal condition: if Clara died before giving birth, leaving no surviving descendants."

Clara’s vision blurred with tears of profound grief and rage. It had all been planned. From the day her father died, to the courtship, to the marriage, to the insidious white powder stirred into her tea every morning. She had not been a wife. She had been an obstacle marked for execution.

"And finally, Your Honor," Marcus said, turning to look back at the defense table, "this contract bears three signatures. Thomas Vance. Gabriel Vance. And a third signature. The co-conspirator who arranged the falsified plane maintenance logs five years ago."
