Chapter 8 - The Prison Visit

Two weeks later.
The visitation room at the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York was cold, gray, and smelled of cheap floor wax and stale coffee.
Liam Sterling sat at a small steel table, wearing a orange prison jumpsuit that was three sizes too large for his thin frame. His hair was greasy, unwashed, and shaved short at the sides. His hands were bound together by heavy steel handcuffs that clicked against the metal tabletop every time he moved.
In two weeks, his world had vanished completely.
His mother was in a medical ward facing twenty years for systemic tax fraud. His assets were gone. His friends had blocked his number. His legal defense team consisted of a overworked public defender who had advised him to take a plea deal.
The heavy steel door at the back of the visitation room unlocked with a loud, mechanical buzz.
Liam looked up, expecting his public defender.
Instead, a guard pulled the door open, and Olivia Vance walked into the room.
She wore a dark green wool coat that draped elegantly over her growing pregnancy, now clearly visible at five months. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves, her skin glowing with radiant health. She carried herself with an effortless, undeniable authority that filled the sterile room.
Behind her stood two Vance security guards, who remained at the door.
Liam’s mouth fell open. "Olivia..."
Olivia walked over to the table, but she did not sit down. She stood across from him, looking down at her ex-husband with a cold, detached curiosity, as if looking at an insect trapped under glass.
"You look terrible, Liam," she said softly.
Liam’s eyes welled with pathetic, desperate tears. He leaned across the table as far as his handcuffs would allow. "Olivia! Oh God, Olivia, please! You came! You came to get me out!"
"I came to deliver a message," Olivia corrected, her voice flat.
"Olivia, please listen to me!" Liam sobbed, his voice cracking hysterically. "I was wrong! I was completely out of my mind! Isabella... Isabella manipulated me! She set me up! My mother forced me into everything! I never stopped loving you, Liv! I swear to God!"
Olivia listened to his pathetic babbling without a single flicker of emotion on her face.
"You didn't love me when I was standing in front of five hundred people with red wine dripping off my stomach, Liam," Olivia said quietly. "You didn't love me when you told me to use the back exit."
Liam froze, his face turning an ash-gray color. "I... I was under so much stress... the IPO..."
"The Sterling Group assets were fully liquidated this morning," Olivia announced smoothly, pulling a crisp set of legal papers from her coat pocket and setting them on the steel table. "Vance Global acquired the green logistics division. I am now the Chief Executive Officer."
Liam stared at the papers, his mind refusing to comprehend the reality. "You... you own my company?"
"I own what's left of it," Olivia corrected. "And under my management, every single employee you underpaid has received a thirty percent salary increase. The retirement funds you raided have been restored."
She leaned down slightly, resting her hands on the edge of the steel table, looking directly into his terrified eyes.
"I came here to tell you one thing, Liam," Olivia whispered. "My child will never hear your name. They will never know you existed. They will grow up with the Vance name, surrounded by love, strength, and truth."
"Olivia... please... it’s my baby too!" Liam cried, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. "Don't take my child away from me!"
"You surrendered your rights two weeks ago," Olivia said, standing back up and pulling her leather gloves back on. "And even if you hadn't... a man who leaves his pregnant wife in the snow to freeze is not a father. He's just a donor."
She turned toward the steel door.
"Olivia! Don't leave me here! Olivia!" Liam screamed, slamming his handcuffed fists against the metal table as the guards stepped forward to push him back into his chair. "OLIVIA!"

The heavy steel door closed, cutting off his pathetic screams completely.
Olivia walked down the concrete hallway, stepping out into the crisp, bright New York sunshine where her private limousine was waiting.
