Chapter 4 - The Execution of Sterling Group

Kane Vance pulled a pristine white linen handkerchief from his breast pocket, wiped his fingers as if he had touched something filthy, and tossed it onto the marble floor at Liam’s feet.

"Viktor," Kane said, not turning around.

"Sir?"

"Initiate Protocol Blackout."

"Initiated, Sir," Volkov replied, tapping the surface of his tablet once.

For three seconds, nothing seemed to happen.

Then, Liam’s smartphone in his breast pocket began to vibrate furiously. A second later, Constance’s phone rang inside her beaded handbag. Then, every board member, every major shareholder, every high-level financial analyst in the room experienced a simultaneous barrage of ringtones, alert pings, and emergency notification chiming.

Liam frantically pulled out his phone. The screen was flashing bright crimson with systemic red alert banners from his corporate network.

MESSAGE FROM CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER: ALL PRIME CREDIT LINES REVOKED BY FIRST ATLANTIC BANK.

MESSAGE FROM RISK MANAGEMENT: U.S. SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION HAS ISSUED EMERGENCY FREEZE ORDER ON STERLING GROUP IPO ASSETS.

MESSAGE FROM LEGAL COUNSEL: NASDAQ SUSPENDS PROSPECTUS LISTING PENDING FRAUD INVESTIGATION.

"What... what is this?!" Liam screamed, his thumb flying across the glass screen in a blind panic. "What did you do?!"

Sir Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, adjusting his gold rimmed spectacles. "At 8:02 PM, Vance Global Holdings acquired forty-two percent of the outstanding debt obligations of the Sterling Group from European distress funds. At 8:05 PM, we exercised our acceleration covenants due to material breach of financial stability clauses."

Pendelton looked at Constance Sterling with cold, professional detachment.

"In simple terms, Mrs. Sterling, your company owes Vance Global six hundred and eighty million dollars, payable immediately. Since your firm’s liquid reserves currently stand at twenty-two million, you are insolvent."

"Insolvent?!" Constance shrieked, clutching her chest, her face turning purple. "We are launching a four-billion-dollar public offering on Friday! You cannot do this! It’s illegal!"

"It is entirely legal, madam," Pendelton countered calmly. "Furthermore, at 8:07 PM, the New York State Attorney General’s Office was provided with unredacted forensic accounting files detailing nine years of systematic tax evasion, offshore shell transfers in the Cayman Islands, and insider trading executed by you and your son."

Liam dropped his phone. It shattered against the marble floor.

Around them, the room was falling into total chaos.

The lead underwriters from the major investment banks were practically running toward the coat check, frantically yelling into their phones to completely sever all associations with the Sterling family. The society reporters were furiously typing on their tablets, broadcasting the downfall of the Sterling family live to every major news outlet in North America.

"Liam!" Isabella whimpered, pulling on his arm. "Liam, do something! Talk to him! Tell him to stop!"

Liam looked at Isabella, his mind spinning out of control. The glamour that had made her so attractive thirty minutes ago had completely vanished. In her stained red dress, surrounded by the wreckage of his family's empire, she looked cheap, cruel, and pathetic.

"Get away from me," Liam shoved her arm off him, his voice trembling with pathetic fury. "Get away from me, you stupid bitch!"

"Liam!" Constance cried out, falling to her knees on the dais as two officers from the NYPD—accompanied by federal agents in dark coats—began marching down the center aisle toward them.

Kane Vance did not watch the police arrive. He turned his back on the Sterling family, stepping down from the dais as if they had already ceased to exist.

"Mr. Vance! Please!" Liam begged, dropping to his knees on the cold marble, reaching out toward Kane’s overcoat. "Please! She’s my wife! I love her! I didn't know! I swear to God I didn't know!"

Kane stopped. He did not turn his head.

"You didn't love her when she was an archivist," Kane said, his voice cold enough to cut steel. "You don't get to love her now that she’s my daughter."

Kane walked out of the ballroom.

Behind him, the handcuffs clicked shut around Liam Sterling’s wrists.
