Chapter 9 - The New Era

Daniel stopped dead in the middle of the lobby, clutching his cardboard box to his chest like a shield.

He stared at me as if I were a stranger—someone he had never seen before in his life. Gone was the quiet, subdued woman who had stood half a step behind him at charity galas. Standing before him was an elite corporate force, surrounded by the very men who had previously paid court to him.

"Claire..." Daniel whispered, his voice cracking.

I stopped in front of him, looking at him with calm, measured grace.

"Hello, Daniel," I said softly.

Alistair Thorne stepped forward, shaking my hand warmly in front of Daniel. "Welcome to your new headquarters, Claire. The board of my investment group has already approved the $50 million credit facility for the restructuring under your new entity."

"Thank you, Alistair," I replied smoothly. "We will begin rebranding the fleet immediately. The new company name will be Sterling Global Logistics."

Daniel took a frantic step toward me. "Claire... please... you own the company now. You own everything! Is there... is there any role for me? A regional advisory position? Something? I know the clients! I know the industry!"

I looked at Daniel, really looked at him—at his wrinkled suit, his desperate eyes, and the empty cardboard box in his hands.

"You don't know the industry, Daniel," I said gently, without an ounce of cruelty, simply stating a cold fact. "You knew how to make speeches. I knew how to run the business."

I turned to my head of security, who was standing quietly near the entrance.

"Please escort Mr. Vance out of the building," I instructed politely. "And make sure he surrenders his access keycard at the front desk."

"Claire! No! Please!" Daniel cried out as the security guard placed a firm, professional hand on his shoulder, turning him toward the exit. "Claire! You can't do this to me! I made you!"

I paused, looking back at him one last time as he was led toward the glass doors.

"You didn't make me, Daniel," I said, my voice carrying clearly across the quiet lobby. "You just rented me. And your lease has expired."

Daniel was led out into the bright morning sunlight, the glass doors sliding shut behind him with a soft, final click.

I turned back to Alistair Thorne and my new executive team.

"Gentlemen," I said, pointing toward the main boardroom. "Let's review the quarterly expansion strategy. We have a lot of work to do."
