Chapter 5 - The Collapse at the Podium

Vanessa let out a sharp shriek, jumping back as champagne soaked her silk train. "Daniel! My dress! Look what you did!"

But Daniel didn't hear her.

He didn't see the champagne on her dress. He didn't see the four hundred guests turning their heads toward Table Four. The world around him had shrunk into a dizzying, terrifying vacuum.

"No..." Daniel whispered, his breath coming in short, shallow gasps. "No, no, no... Claire wouldn't do that. She wouldn't... she loved me! She built those entities for tax restructuring! She told me it was just for tax protection!"

"It was for protection," a crisp, professional voice spoke up from behind him.

Miriam Vance-Sterling—my lead attorney—stepped out from the shadows of the ballroom entrance. She was dressed in an impeccable charcoal suit, holding a leather briefcase, flanked by two uniformed court process servers.

"Ms. Sterling protected her assets from a reckless executive who mistook her brilliance for compliance," Miriam stated smoothly, walking directly up to Daniel.

"Miriam!" Daniel gasped, his eyes wild with panic. "What is this?! What did Claire do?!"

"Ms. Sterling did nothing illegal, Mr. Vance," Miriam replied calmly, pulling a thick stack of legal notices from her briefcase. "She simply executed her rights as the sole legal owner of the fourteen holding companies that power your business."

Miriam turned to face the entire ballroom, raising her voice so every politician, investor, and reporter could hear her clearly.

"As of 6:00 PM tonight, Claire Sterling LLC has issued a formal Notice of Default to Vance Dynamics due to unpaid commercial lease conversions following the termination of the marital lease agreement."

She handed the top document directly to Daniel, pressing it against his chest.

"You have twenty-four hours to cure the default balance of $4.2 million, or an emergency injunction will be executed, grounding all 450 transport trucks, shutting down the proprietary dispatch servers, and padlocking your six regional fulfillment centers."

Gasps exploded across the room like a series of small detonations.

Reporters from the local business journal pulled out their phones, typing frantically. Board members rushed toward Daniel, their faces twisted in panic and rage.

"Daniel! What is she talking about?!" shouted the mayor, backing away from the head table. "Is Vance Dynamics solvent?!"

"Of course we're solvent!" Daniel yelled desperately, waving his arms, his hair falling out of its perfect style. "This is a misunderstanding! My ex-wife is bitter! She's trying to ruin my wedding day out of spite!"

Vanessa grabbed Daniel's arm, her voice rising to a high-pitched scream. "Daniel! Tell them she's lying! Tell them we're rich! My father invested his entire retirement fund into your IPO last week!"

Daniel looked at Vanessa, then at his board members, then at Alistair Thorne, who was already putting on his overcoat.

"Alistair! Wait!" Daniel pleaded, taking a step forward and stumbling over his own feet. "Alistair, please! We can work this out! You can lend me the $4.2 million to cover the lease default!"

Alistair Thorne paused at the edge of the ballroom, looking back at Daniel with cold, unadulterated disgust.

"Lend you money, Daniel?" Alistair asked softly. "I don't invest in men who mistake their wife's intelligence for their own. My firm is pulling out of the IPO effective immediately. And by tomorrow morning, we will be calling in our $14 million debt note."

"No... Alistair, please!" Daniel dropped to his knees right there on the parquet floor, right in front of the four hundred guests, his hands outstretched in desperation. "Please! Don't do this!"

"Get up, you pathetic fool," Alistair said coldly. "You wanted an audience tonight. Now you have one."
